August 8th
Beta's 167th birthday is coming soon. Does anyone have any special plans for it?

It is interesting to recall that this calendar is the same as 1989, when Beta turned 150...
Hmmm... at 9PM on 8/8 in Oxford, on the third floor of Old Main (well, Harrison Hall, the best one could do in 1989), in the southeast corner of the central part of the building...
"Though it's just a memory some memories last forever." (Rush, "Lakeside Park")
Or as Knox would put it: esto perpetua!

I will be at my local church, going through the standard 'baptism classes' for my newborn daughter. My father-in-law shares the same b-day as Beta - so, I have a lot going on this year. I also have a pics of me in front of the plaques in Harrison Hall - I will never forget when the EC (at the time) took us into a classroom within Harrison Hall, and said "well, this is where it all started". And I was like, 'that's it? Where is the rose above the door?"
I like seeing the Phi Delta Theta plaque outside the dorm where they were founded, and the Sigma Chi plaque outside their building downtown where they were founded. Actually, I like reading all fraternity histories....good stuff. We are all unique.

Just to be clear: the REAL Old Main was torn down in the 1950s, and the current Harrison Hall was built... the closest one can come to the location is the eastern corner of a central third-floor classroom on the southern side of the building. I have actually seen a picture of the Union Lit Hall, though it was nowhere near old enough... I've also read their constitution. If one examines that one, as well as the Erodelphian, one will get some VERY STRONG HINTS as to how Knox and Marshall went about their work. One needs to remember that Knox, graduating from college at the age of 19, on that Thursday in August, was quite good at Greek, as were all the rest.

Happy Birthday, Beta! You've done wonderous things for me. I hope that I can one day do the same for you and my brothers.
phi kai phi 'til the day I die!

Funny, but I never even thought about it.
With the chapter Treasurer on internship this summer, I stepped in to some degree to help with financial management- and this past week has been a real trying time getting the new leases wrapped up and all in addition to my work on my own new company.
Today a lot of that got resolved and I just got off the phone with the President of our Housing Corporation where we talked about a lot of good news for the chapter- including our award at Convention.
It was a good day to be a Beta- and as I prepare to turn in for the night it is all the nicer to be reminded this is the day when it all got started so many years ago.

Has anyone ever noticed that the minutes of the first regular meeting were dated "August 9th"???
Was that meeting three hours long, or did JGS just do the write-up the next day - or what?
It's amazing to think how many years have run by - the work of eight young men, in age from 19 to 27 sill having its effect. How they must watch in amazement as we still recall their names and their labours, even here on this technical marvel...
Quote:
"Be worthy of the name they gave,
In friendship strong and true,
Base actions scorn with loathing deep,
The noblest paths pursue,
Be pure in life, in virtue strong,
And may the Father's eye,
Watch you that you'll meet again,
A happy band on High."

Beta Psi. West Virginia University.
Unfortunately this year I celebrated Aug.8th in Iraq. It was fun though. We had plenty of 'fireworks' to mark the occasion.
