Unhappy Very Confused

I know this gets asked alot and I read the sticky, but I have a question about Tri-Membership. I have been asking people at my school and have had very mixed answers, So I though I'd come here for clarificatio okay here it is.

I am a Mass Comm major and would like to be a part of the Mass Comm GLO which I belive is Zeta Phi Eta

I would also like to Join a Service Organazion
Alpha Phi Omega

I would also like to rush a social GLO next fall

Now I have been told this is not possible, I have also been told that it would be to much work. So i would just like some opnions.

be harsh if you must.

You mean Alpha Phi Omega?

If I were you, I would keep my AKA interest on the downlow.

A professional GLO, service GLO, and general/social GLO are allowed.

I know a girl who is a Phi Sigma Pi, Alpha Phi Omega, and Alpha Kappa Alpha.

If everyone is saying it will not work and you want to see for yourself then try it. However....

We will NOT answer membership questions....sorry please see the stickies at the top of the AKA forum.

ETA
You may find that the time that sororities require (not just AKA) is a lot and you will not have time to join 895 sororities and make good grades.

Can be done, has been done. You probably don't want to try to do all that at once - it is a lot of work, so go into it slowly. Being active in all three types of orgs at once, that's fine. Trying to pledge all three at once - bad plan.

I was not trying to ask membership questions. I just did not want to be denied membership for joing another organization. A friend of mine joined Sigma Sigma Sigma and then said I wanna be a Delta ! Well I guess you know how it ended.

It depends on the campus culture, and the attitude of the chapters. At my school, many people who ended up in D9 orgs were first members of other GLOS (Phi Sigma Pi, Delta Sigma Pi, APO).

And to answer your question about why you should keep your interest on the DL...

Members of the D9 value DISCRETION and HUMILITY. Often, people who are proclaiming from the rooftops that they want to be in a particular org are not humble about their pursuit. And if your friend was saying she wanted to be a Delta to everyone she met, that may have something to do with why she didn't make it.

I agree with Senusret that simultaneous membership in professional, service, and social GLOs is typically allowed, however you basically answered your own question in that the time requirement is a serious consideration. As we instruct our pledges (and sometimes remind our actives), you're at school to get an education first; everything else is secondary. So even if you could be an active member of all three organizations, do you actually have the time to do so along with school, work, and any other demands you may have on your time?

I had always heard that you don't want to make your interest known, but never understood why. Something about making the process more difficult. Thanks for that clarification.

Oh, sweetie... ok, listen, I haven't been here that long either but I'm telling you you are inviting more heat than I think you're probably ready to handle. I saw in another of your posts that you're a freshman at VCU (and on that note, posting similar questions all over different threads isn't going to do you well either), I know VCU has a greek system, I'm sure they have a greek office and lots and lots of information about how things work on THAT campus. Why trying to pledge 3 organizations at one time is a bad idea seems pretty self-evident to most of us; your just coming into the college/greek environment, it's a valid question for you. No one's saying it can't be done, but based on experience pledging even one organization, I think any alum would tell you that 3 is biting off more than you can chew. AND still manage to be a student. Why risk 3 memberships when you don't even have one?

Go to your greek office, speak to greeks in your classes, be discreet when wise and weigh your options with a realistic view toward how much you can handle and not flunk out.

Good luck!

sweetie, SLOW DOWN! you have at least 4 more years to do the things you're aspiring to do. get your grades up and keep them up. become involved in other campus activities and research the orgs you're interested in on their national websites and in your campus greek life office. develop or fine tune your time management skills not just what what you think you want to do, but for life.

I REALLY do not understand what this obsession is with trying to do it all so quickly. being in a fraternity or sorority ain't all it's cracked up to be.

ok, yeah, it is. but give it time. it will happen when it's supposed to happen and not a second sooner.

I know this may seem confusing ????

I just have alot of intersest and i am just trying to find the best sloution. If it's not to bold to say : I am interesed in joining a GLO, but I am also interesed in starting one to help my community. I've looked on websites and just want some feedback on what the best option might be. I think one of you said it best when you said education comes first, so i guess i'll work on that first.
