I heard about this story on my way to work. This makes me sick, and it make the process harder for someone that WANTS to adopt or be a foster parent, like I do (not now obvi but when I'm settled).... disgusting

It said that most of them were handicapped. That could be why.
Sick, sick, sick.

Fear is a very powerful thing. It's the reason so many people in abusive situations don't just leave, it’s not as easy as just walking out the door. People get brainwashed into believing all sorts of things.
Do you remember Shawn Hornbeck's case a couple months ago? The 15 year old who was found with another missing boy. Shawn had been missing for 4 years; he had new friends and lived a pretty "normal" life. Walking away would be "easy" if it was only physical and had no emotional or psychological attachment.

How much do folks earn per kid as foster parents? I know my aunt is going to be the guardian over 2 kids her sister and her sister's husband (who both recently died) had adopted. Those kiddos earn quite a bit of money due to their parents' social security checks (all going into their trusts now from what I'm told). I can see, however, that if my aunt was an unscrupulous person, there'd be plenty of $$ incentive to get that guardianship.

my parents were foster parents for about 3 years. besides the monthly pay (about 1k a month...) they recieved food stamps, medicaid, etc. they probably netted close to 3k a month for the two girls we had. this lady probably got twice as much per kid if they were getting social security as well...

I think I heard that foster parents in DC earn 800 a month per kid.
One thing I hate about the system is that some of these triflin ass foster parents will warehouse these kids, recycle their school uniforms (even if they are ill-fitting), never send the kid to school with money for field trips, make them eat the free school breakfast, free school lunch, AND stay after school for the snack, and pocket all the damn money.
That money is for THE CHILD!

Here's what I don't get. Every time you adopt, you go through an exhaustive home study and the worker has to meet with all the kids who are still at home. Then after you adopt, there are several post-placement visits. Why didn't a worker notice that the kids were in awful condition?

carnation -- perhaps they got paid to? Perhaps "mom" told the kids if they misbehaved there'd be severe consequences? Who knows?
Thankfully, this is an aberration.
Most adoptive families in my experience are great.

I keep thinking, though, didn't they look all scarred and starved? Definitely, most adoptive families we've met are great but we have seen some really sketchy looking foster parents. We've known some nice ones but we went to a foster parent training and were horrified because most of the candidates looked like they'd been in the movie "Deliverance" and acted like it too. Other adoptive parents we know have seen the same thing at foster trainings and some have walked out. Children's and Family Services will tell you they're desperate for foster parents but come on, they don't have to endanger the children.

besides that, it takes too long to go in and talk to them one by one everytime a new kid comes. they just need to place the kids, they dont have time to dig around. the fact that they were living in this nice looking house probably threw the placement people off...
