Do a lot of students take summer classes at RIC? People always seem so busy in the summer with cookouts, weddings, the beach, etc. I think you'd have a harder time doing your nm program then. You could always bid them and hold them over until the fall though.

Check with your campus office - GLOs may be prevented from holding summer recruitment events.

Does the campus office have any rules at all for you at this point? I was under the impression that they didn't. But if there are rules and regulations for your group, definitely check up on that.

I think it would be a hard sell for most people. Summer for most people is ablout relaxing, working, or taking a few classes. I don't see many people being up for mandatory sorority meetings and stuff during the summer.

I'm not talking about things like summer planning for rush and stuff. We ALL have that. It's one thing to have actives meet up for officer training or rush planning. It's another thing to have weekly new member activities during the summer.

Butterfly,
I've been following your story for a bit and I think it's great that you're bringing Greeks to RIC--I grew up in MA and I really like seeing threads about the area. However, I would caution against having a ton of mandatory events over the summer, even if people are around. As you know, being in a sorority is really rewarding but it can also get stressful. As a collegian and through my experiences volunteering as an advisor as an alum I realized that a lesser time commitment over the summer is highly beneficial, if not neccessary. It gives sisters a chance to decompress and reflect on their experience and hopefully return to school refreshed and ready to go.

Of course, an event or meeting here or there (or when neccessary for planning) can help keep people involved and your development as a new chapter moving forward. Just my $0.02

Never did it. I think it is stupid. 90% of the members are not in school and 90% of the students are not in school.

Madmax - In our case, 100% of our members are taking summer classes and the majority of students at our college take summer classes.

Anyway, thanks again for all of the advice, it's very helpful!
Given that information, it wouldn't hurt to hold summer COR events and to use that information to inform your fall recruitment decisions...

It's possible that some desirable PNMs may not be on campus from May-August, so you might just want to hold some "get to know you" events in that time... why not hold some philanthropy activities/events during the summer and give out bids in the fall following some official COB activities?
