AKA Membership - too late to consider?

I would appreciate some advice. When I was in undergraduate school, we did not have sororites or fraternties at the time. In grad school I worked and went to school, did not participate in a lot of extracurricular activities. I have since obtained my law degree, am active in community in church. I also have come to learn about the mission and goals of the ASA sorority and would like to pursue a graduate membership. From reading some threads, it appears that I can become a member only if I am invited by someone who is currently a member, is this correct? Also, is it appropriate to approch someone who is a member to express interest in joining or does one have to wait to be asked? Is there a reluctance on the part of those who are already members to allow others to join? I would appreciate responses.

V

Alumnae initiation is a very touchy subject at Greek Chat. I have a question for you. Are you talking about Alpha Kappa Alpha or Alpha Sigma Alpha?

Alumnae initiation is NOT a touchy subject.

Soliciting assistance on GreekChat
regarding alumnae initiation and asking membership-related questions are what is considered sensitive subjects.

Please learn how to distinguish the two. Thanks.

I think those are parts of the whole, and would not really be different.

Can we keep this discussion in the appropriate thread? This is what causes problems. Don't let it spill over.

Correct. Joining as an alumnae initiate is very rare and not the same as collegiate recruitment where you have many options and a formal recruitment process.

It is not appropriate to ask to be invited to membership. If you have a friend who is an ASA, you could certainly express interest in her sorority and how you wish you could be part of an organization like that. If she takes the hint and sees that you might be a potential sister, she'll talk to her alumnae association.

No. It is just not our policy to invite women to membership who have come to alumnae initiation through their own recommendation. We prefer to invite people whom we know personally for the alumnae initate program.

Whether it is AKA or ASA your best bet is to talk to your friends in the GLO. If you don't know anyone, the best way to get information is to get in touch with an alumnae/graduate chapter (still not sure if you mean ASA or AKA here) and/or contact that GLO's HQ for more information.

Be aware that they may simply tell you it is not an option.

Good luck

Wow, inappropriate. I clearly have no moderator under my name and I have no way of making anyone do anything, but I don't think asking that the thread stay on-topic is crazy.

Von Daniel,

Contact the national office of the organization and/or speak to a member with whom you are already familiar. Asking questions here is not really appropriate because membership policy is something that should only be discussed with knowledgeable members of each specific GLO. As it has already been stated, this very issue is rather contentious amongst the members of GC. You've been given solid advice already and I am backing that up.

If and when you are invited to membership, please feel free to come back and post your story. Until then, you are welcome to join in the discussions but I would advise you to refrain from asking questions regarding membership selection, etc.. Discretion is valued by all groups.
