My "sister-mother", as we like to call them, and I were already good friends for 2 1/2 years prior to my joining AGD.
She was my support when a local sorority on campus attempted haze me, and was the reason why I decided to give the Greeks one more chance. I knew from the beginning that she was going to be my sister-mother!!!
Now that she's transferred schools (she's in NEW YORK while I'm in HAWAII) I miss her every day, but I'm looking forward to being her maid of honor at her wedding this Christmas!

I have been lucky. I am not only in a sorority but was a little sis to a fraternity as well. I love both my big sis, and mom!! But I think that my big sis and I are much closer!!!! She really kept me going during pledging!

Everyone in my pledge class (5) thought that the same woman was her big sister, except me. My big made the mistake of sending me a gift and signing the card in her VERY distinctive handwriting. I was happy cause she was one of the main reasons I pledged where I did - I just thought she was the coolest thing on 2 feet and I was so honored she chose me for her little!
matthew g - your "big sister" is someone who serves as a mentor to you in the sorority and makes a special commitment to always be there for you. Sometimes the bigs choose the littles, sometimes the littles choose the bigs, and sometimes they are matched up in a way similar to bid matching.

Could you please explain this "big sister/little sister" to me.
And who chooses the pairs and on what basis?
Thanks

my big sister was evil to me during big/lil week. She even helped me with one of my clues. She was going alum at the end of the semester so I was sure she couldn't have a little, but she and I had clicked right away. At my candlelighting the four women I had put on my list all blew out my candle at once and said "Who do you want it to be?" so I told them if they were going to be that way I didn't want any of them! (THey knew I was just joking) and my big came forward and hugged me. It was fun though, I wish I had another big little week. When I got my little, don't think I wasn't mean to her too!! She cried at her candlelighting cause she was convinced I wasn't her big and I made someone else blow out her candle first. When it got to me again and i blew it out I thought she would jump on me. I just hugged her.. poor thing cried for ten minutes cause of the grief I gave her from making her think it was someone else!!! We laugh about it now!!

I loved torturing my lils. All the bigs would get together and think up different ways to confuse the girls. I'd even leave gifts for other lils w/ notes, so that they would be clueless.
It's not uncommon to make sure your clues completely contradict eachother.

We don't have a big/lil week. Instead all the bigs find out and then one night the whole house helps set up this maze of string...each lil has a different color yarn, and she has to follow it all through the house upstairs, downstairs...we use the whole thing...then at the end of the yarn there is a key with her name on it...she takes that key and goes out into our parking lot where all the bigs are waiting in their locked cars honking there horns and flashing their lights. The lil has to go to the different cars and try to use her key to unlock the doors. Then when she finds the right car she finds her big sister.

I love my big sister! We chose our big sisters as pledges, and I had wanted another girl who was already taken. I ended up loving my big sis more than ever. I have two little sisters -- one adopted -- who I love dearly. I also have six big brothers -- one from each fraternity, and two little brothers -- both from the fraternity our sorority is coupled with. Wanna know what my Christmas is like???

Well, DGPledge, how about an update for us?!
I love my big and my family. I got my big from a scavenger hunt which we can no longer do (which totally sucks because it was a fun scavengar hunt where we got clues as to where to find all the big sisters). We did it all as a pledge class so we were together helping each other find our clues. I was 99% sure of mine too (because of the handwriting) but I was still excited.
I scared the heck out of my little -- I had called her and said come to my room in a few, I'm going to run to the bathroom and then I'll be right there. So she came on in to wait, and I had purposely left posters and signs out saying "Angie - I LOVE MY LIL SIS!" and Angie was another new member. Well of course when I came back in, Daisy was in tears sitting on my bed. I acted completely shocked (and the oscar goes to....) and started getting tears in my eyes and said "I'm so sorry" -- please don't say anything! And she was so upset (I felt bad about it at first, but it was SO WORTH IT) -- for theirs, we did the string and I was hiding in the stairwell. She opened the door and was all but frowning and when she saw me we both started screaming. She was like -- you dirty dog, I thought you really had picked Angie! We cried forever! Then we were really screaming because the stairwell door had locked behind us and we couldn't get out, LOL!
I adopted my other lil, and now I have about 13 people in my family. Its nuts during big/lil week and other occasions because I want each of them to feel special to me.

Ok, here's an update...
I got my first pick !!! It was the best day ever. They told us, all the pledges, to meet at 7pm they had us waiting around until about 8pm...finally we were all handed candles and put in a circle- surrounded by all the actives...we had a little ceremony then our bigs came over and lit our candles! I couldn't be happier...
