Political Rockstar in Training (PRT)
Get involved with the party of your choice! Register @ their national, state and county websites, get their newsletters. Get involved with College Democrats or College Republicans or if graduated Young Democrats (ages 15-35) or Young Republicans (ages 15-40). I don't know the Republican sites but the DNC site is
www.democrats.org and College Democrats are
www.collegedems.com. Call your local candidate, volunteer, etc... politics1.com has a list of races.
www.yourcongress.com has an excellent website, not only for all people to learn about congress but also a section called "working in congress" with job openings, reasons to work in congress, reasons to not, what it's like to work there etc...
-One of the biggest pieces of advice I have learned so far in my little fledgling of a beginning of a career I hope (

) is to stay involved, stay visible, and work hard. Hard work is noticed and rewarded!!!!
Pluses-Every reason you are interested in politics is a plus! You can go in so many different directions and do so much to help people that it's amazing!!
Minuses-Long hours, hard work, a lot of weekends. A lot of times you are going to have to pick work over your life in a lot of different ways. You have to remember that it isn't just for a paycheck, a lot of ppl are relying on you for a lot of reasons and you are gonna have to put it first. Also, you are open to a lot of scrutiny down the road, as I'm sure everyone knows. Also, don't go into politics thinking that tomorrow you are going to be working in the White House or Congress. That's like thinking that you are going to work in the mail room of a company today and be CEO of a Fortune 500 tomorrow. Those are jobs that ppl work for 20 years in some cases to get, you have to pay your dues and it can be hard. You also aren't going to make much for a while.
But, as I said before, people don't go into politics for just a job, it's usually what you love so you won't mind the crap. Although if you are unsure, be sure, for example, that you are going to still love politics after you spend 12 hours going door to door in blazing heat, freezing cold, rain, sleet, etc... as a volunteer or a poorly paid worker for 2 months only to have your candidate lose. But, at the same time, you can work in so many different things like policy, campaigns, analyzing, etc... that the sky is the limit to what you can do!
