Resources for jobs/ carreer growth

I hope that all of you ladies with take the time to do this:

1) List the job type that you have experience with.

2) List resources from that type of job that would be helpful to a sister interested in gathering more information and/or finding jobs.

3) List a testimonial and provide some pluses and/or minuses
that you have experienced in the career mentioned above that might help someone that is still learning about where they would like to pursue a career.

Excellent sites for those of you interested in learning about leadership development, associations/organizations, management skills and job information in the associations world!

http://www.asaenet.org/main/
http://www.asaenet.org/careers/

http://www.gwsae.org/Home.htm
http://www.centeronline.org/

I have been a member of both of these organizations and they are excellent, providing tons of trainings which one can also use CEU’s etc. Also, they have great places (for free) to hunt for jobs mostly in D.C. since of course it is the home of most associations in the U.S. but they also list jobs in different geographic areas in ASAE.

Sociotherapist

Any resourse that you can find dealing with sociology/psychology and children. Going to a local childrens group home and talking to social workers is also helpful. My organizations website
Hillside Children's Center

--Pluses--
If you want to work with less advantaged/forunated children this is the career or path to start for you. You definately get to see how the "system" works. You gain a better understanding of what Social Workers, Social Services and the government do for these children.
You also get to see what these kids are really like and how they really feel about their situation. We had to watch this video on how a child looks at his/her whole process of being adopted and it can bring you to tears. After seeing that I can somewhat understand why these kids sometimes act out the way they do.
It also makes you see what your downfalls and good qualities are, like...are you really patient, empathetic, etc.
--Minuses--
If your VERY sensitive this job isnt for you. You have to hear all the things that these kids have been through and what some are continuing to go through. In all honesty an episode of Jerry Springer couldn't even touch some of these kids lives.
The job can also be stressful. You have to deal with kids who do all sorts of acting out (PM if you want specific types, I just dont think Itd be tasteful to do it out). These are kids who do like to manipulate and some do take advantage of the people who are trying to help them. Some don't know any better. You have to be a teacher, leader, dictator and somewhat of a parent all in one.

Welcome back Jeannine :D

Political Rockstar in Training (PRT);)

Get involved with the party of your choice! Register @ their national, state and county websites, get their newsletters. Get involved with College Democrats or College Republicans or if graduated Young Democrats (ages 15-35) or Young Republicans (ages 15-40). I don't know the Republican sites but the DNC site is www.democrats.org and College Democrats are www.collegedems.com. Call your local candidate, volunteer, etc... politics1.com has a list of races. www.yourcongress.com has an excellent website, not only for all people to learn about congress but also a section called "working in congress" with job openings, reasons to work in congress, reasons to not, what it's like to work there etc...

-One of the biggest pieces of advice I have learned so far in my little fledgling of a beginning of a career I hope ( ;) ) is to stay involved, stay visible, and work hard. Hard work is noticed and rewarded!!!!

Pluses-Every reason you are interested in politics is a plus! You can go in so many different directions and do so much to help people that it's amazing!!

Minuses-Long hours, hard work, a lot of weekends. A lot of times you are going to have to pick work over your life in a lot of different ways. You have to remember that it isn't just for a paycheck, a lot of ppl are relying on you for a lot of reasons and you are gonna have to put it first. Also, you are open to a lot of scrutiny down the road, as I'm sure everyone knows. Also, don't go into politics thinking that tomorrow you are going to be working in the White House or Congress. That's like thinking that you are going to work in the mail room of a company today and be CEO of a Fortune 500 tomorrow. Those are jobs that ppl work for 20 years in some cases to get, you have to pay your dues and it can be hard. You also aren't going to make much for a while.

But, as I said before, people don't go into politics for just a job, it's usually what you love so you won't mind the crap. Although if you are unsure, be sure, for example, that you are going to still love politics after you spend 12 hours going door to door in blazing heat, freezing cold, rain, sleet, etc... as a volunteer or a poorly paid worker for 2 months only to have your candidate lose. But, at the same time, you can work in so many different things like policy, campaigns, analyzing, etc... that the sky is the limit to what you can do!

Re: Resources for jobs/ carreer growth

1) List the job type that you have experience with.
I'm a public library administrator.

2) List resources from that type of job that would be helpful to a sister interested in gathering more information and/or finding jobs.
Librarianship in general: www.ala.org
Public libraries: www.pla.org

3) List a testimonial and provide some pluses and/or minuses
that you have experienced in the career mentioned above that might help someone that is still learning about where they would like to pursue a career.

If you like people and you like information, consider a career as a librarian. Librarians help people find the information they need to make their lives better. We are the original human search engines!
