room for an NPC alumna volunteer?

My family is moving very near to a small college that has four NPC sororities, less than a five minute drive. Alpha Sigma Alpha is not one of the organizations on campus, but I would love to show my support in some way. Do you imagine there would be room somewhere in the system for a volunteer like me? Or would it seem totally weird?

I know I can simply call the Greek Life office, but I thought the GC audience could give good insight on the "seems totally weird" aspect of my question.

There may be, depending on whether those four NPC groups permit non-member advisers? I know for AOII we can have non-members advising in certain positions if needed.

I would say totally depends on the organizations represented as well. Alpha Sigma Tau allows non member advisors as well. But I know not all do.

There also may be opportunities within the Greek Life Office as well. I know when I was in grad school, while I advised a chapter of my organization, it was an hour and a half away and the school I went to didn't have my org. I did befriend some people who worked in the GLO however and often volunteered to help at things like MRABA signing, and judging homecoming competitions as a way to get my fix!

I know on my campus it would seem weird if your chapter has never been on campus, were not an employee/graduate student, or no previous connection to the university.

It likely really depends on the campus and their culture.

At my school, I know that Panhellenic is actually supposed to have an advisor who is a member of a group not on campus if possible. (We don't, because its the middle of Canada and there aren't random Greeks laying around but if possible we should)

Speaking as someone from a small campus with only 4 NPCs, with not a lot of available alumnae nearby, I'd guess they'd be happy for some help! If nothing else, formal recruitment and bid day can use all the hands we can get! It never hurts to call the Greek life adviser and ask. :-)

I think that a neutral party could certainly be useful in some areas: formal recruitment, j-board (or whatever you call the process by which one sorority complains about another), etc.

And what do you have to lose? If it's totally weird, you have an awkward phone conversation, and then you move on.

Your time would probably be better served/appreciated with the alumnae panhellenic. You could carve out a niche volunteering to help with alumnae-collegiate relations with local colleges!

They might appreciate having an RFM specialist who is a disinterested 3rd party. Maybe NPC can tell you what it takes to get that "certification" and at the same time you'd want to be in touch with the Greek Life office to see if that is something they'd like help with. I definitely could see value in your time with Panhellenic, and also the Alumnae Panhellenic. Depending on the size of the city/town, there may not be an Alumnae Panhel. But if there is one, you might be stepping on toes by going straight to the Greek Life director. So probably start there (which makes my entire post backwards, sorry!)

If they do bid matching by hand, there is always a need for a disinterested party.

Thanks for the great replies! I'll do a little digging around and see what I can find.

This is a teeny tiny town, so I doubt that there is much of an Alumnae Panhellenic presence. I'll look into it though.
