Does your GLO *require* school recognition?
After reading about the situation at Georgetown University and at Harvard, I'm beginning to wonder how unusual that it is that for an Alpha Phi Omega chapter to exist, there *much* be a recognition by the school for Alpha Phi Omega as at Student Organization. Yes, I know we are a service fraternity, but I didn't think that was what separated us in that regard
Harvard has Alpha Epsilon Pi, Sigma Chi, Sigma Alpha Epsilon, Kappa Alpha Theta, Kappa Kappa Gamma, and Delta Gamma all officially unrecognized,
Georgetown has several NIC (which are chartered to Georgetown although unrecognized) and a good number of the NPHC (which are shared with other campuses in DC).
So are there any NIC/NPC/NPHC GLOs that specifically require school recognition?

I'm pretty sure that Alpha Phi also isn't recognized at Harvard, so I'd guess that we don't require it.

I believe that Harvard is its own special situation. Organizations waive some of the usual requirements to be affiliated with such a prestigious university.

I am not sure what APhiA's rules are anymore. Seems like when I became a member, city-wide chapters didn't need school recognition. Now I feel like at least one of those campuses must recognize the chapter and be okay with non-campus members joining. I could be wrong.

SAI requires it. Petitioning colonies have to have letters of support from people such as the Dean of students and the head of the school/department of music, and be a recognized organization on campus. So it would be kinda difficult to establish a chapter without the university officially recognizing the organization.
That said, I believe there are some schools who may not recognize social fraternities/sororities but do have allowances for service and professional ones.

Not sure what APhiA's rules are, but as far as mentioning the case of Harvard, I do know that the Rho Nu chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha, Inc. encompasses three campuses, those of Harvard, MIT, and Tufts.

Yes, we have many city-wide and metropolitan chapters. One of my best friends is from Rho Nu. The rules used to be looser with those kinds of chapters.

It does, but the rule isn't written in stone. When we colonized, a letter from IFC and the school in our support was required. That said, HQ can make exceptions.

In SAI, though, if university recognition is not maintained it does not affect the chapter's charter. My chapter was active on campus but was not a registered student organization for a number of years while I was a collegiate.

Several of our Canadian chapters are not recognized by their universities because (at least some of) the universities will not recognize single gender organizations. They are not anti-Greek and don't discourage it, like Harvard does, but they simply aren't recognized orgs.

Not NIC/NPC/NPHC, but Sinfonia requires recognition.
