Does your organization have campus lockdown procedures?
Carroll University had a lock down earlier this week due to a possible active shooter (turned out to be someone with an air gun). Barnard/Columbia had a bomb scare tonight and were on lock down for a brief time. MIT has an active shooter on campus right now and is on lock down.
This is happening with increasing frequency. I know all GLOs have fire drills and procedures for those types of events. Does your GLO have lock down procedures? What do they entail? Is there a common place- facebook, email, text- where members check in during a lock down so everybody is accounted for? Is there a procedure for notifying the chapter advisor?
I'd like to hear from a variety of chapter situations- commuter schools, schools with houses and schools without houses.

All we really had when I was an undergrad was our crisis management plan. It'd be a situation where someone may have died, or the house burned down, or there was a hazing incident, or whatever else along those lines.
In its simplest form, basically, the President is the only person who talks to anyone about it, end of story.
There's also our guidelines from HQ: http://www.sigep.org/resources/chapt...is-management/
Here's a sample section:

Dealing with the media
If contacted, only the president or chapter counselor should speak for the chapter. Avoid “no comment” as it leads to speculation. Instead, make a simple statement: “We are aware that an incident occurred and are cooperating fully with the police and university officials who are investigating.” Keep repeating the above statement if you are pursued further. Do not give in because you are asked the same question several different ways. Never release names or admit liability. Depending on the circumstances, the national Headquarters may take over any direct contact with the media including the issuance of a press statement.

I went to MIT. A campus police officer was shot and killed last night. The campus is currently on lockdown. Classes are cancelled, employees were told to stay home, and students were told to stay in their residences.
My chapter's alumnae relations committee chair sent out an email on Monday to all chapter alumnae to let us know that the chapter president had contacted all active sisters and they were all accounted for. We don't have a house, so I imagine this involved a lot of phone calls and emails.

Yup. Never, for example, do this:

But a campus lockdown procedure? Nope. I'm not aware the campus has ever been locked down. Campus shooters are a pretty rare thing to happen. I'd rather we'd spend time on things like preparing for tornadoes, ice storms, etc.
Though these things are receiving a great deal of media attention, they are extremely rare. You're probably more likely to die by shark bite than by being murdered by a rampaging killer on your campus.

This is a timely discussion as my alma mater had a lockdown last weekend. I'm still on the emergency SMS, so I got a text at about 1 a.m. about the incident and the lockdown. What made the situation a little tricky from my chapter's standpoint is that the president and most of exec were off campus, five hours away at Zeta Day.
Between that and today's tornado watch, I'm thinking it might be a good time to come up with a plan. We have the standard "what to do in the event of a chapter crisis" as some mentioned above, but it doesn't cover things like this.

I know that all Tri Delta chapters are required to have procedures for these types of things, my collegiate chapter included. When I was risk management chair, there were copies of these plans located throughout the house, along with phone trees and procedures. We never had any incidents while I was RM, though, although most of the plans were well known by the collegiate members, as we reviewed them once a semester.

I think these types of lock downs are becoming more frequent, especially since Virginia Tech. It is not one of our current required documents, but I'm thinking it should be. We have the stuff about media and the Chapter Advisor has guidelines about other types of crises, but not campus lock downs. A lot of schools in Boston were on lock down Thursday night and Friday.
