Sorority & fraternity hazing in New York

Today's New York Times has a very damning story about supposed rampant hazing at SUNY Binghamton by both fraternities and sororities. Does anyone know how accurate this is? Supposedly two sororities lost their charters for behavioral problems. Oddly, no specific groups are mentioned except for an "unrecognized" fraternity named Alpha Pi Epsilon. The numerous cases cited sound pretty juvenile and disgusting and I cannot imagine any national organization tolerating that if it is as openly done as the article suggests. Interestingly, the Binghamton campus is probably the highest rated academically all the SUNY branches.

A little warning... I can see where this thread might go astray. Let's keep all of the hearsay, gossip, etc. out of this thread or I'll lock it. I haven't seen that yet, but the last thing I want to do is end up giving some group undeserved bad PR or worse yet, get them investigated by their HQ.

Thanks.

The response in the article from the campus Panhellenic president was really disappointing, like she condones it or doesn't care. When you lose 2 out of 6 total Panhellenic sororities in the same year, there is a definite problem in the Greek culture on your campus.

I actually counted 55 on their website, but I could be off by one or two. Either way, 1470 divided by 53 is 27-28 members (average) per chapter. That doesn't sound too outrageous to me. And it does come to about 10% of their student body, as was mentioned.

Some may have memberships you can count on one hand. This is not uncommon among MCGLO's and even some of the D9 chapters.
