Am I too old
I have an issue. As you can see I wanna be a greek. I know what fraternity, and chapter I want to join, but I want to give as little information as possible, but I need answers to some questions. I Graduated from High school in 98. I wanted to go greek then, but my life was a mess, and my head was not on straight. I only lasted a year. I lived my life in a cloud of weed smoke for a few years, and made some bad decissions. I got my life together and I am back in school at the local community college and after two semesters I am achieving a 3.6 GPA. Im tranfering to a four year school in fall 2013. My desire to go greek never left, but I am 33 years old. I know I have to wait a semester, but my question are, am I too old to take part in the M.I.P., and would it be wise to go to the events, get to know the members of that chapter, and let them get to know me before attending the university? If any greeks could respond I would greatly appreciate it.

What kind of Greek organization do you want to join? NIC or what?
And at 33, do you really want to hang out with 18 year olds and go to parties with 18 year old college girls?? Pretty creepy to me....

Yes, it's a BGLO.I dont wanna hang out with 18 year olds and go to college parties. It is not about partying to me. It is about accomplishing a goal, kind of like summiting a mountain. Correct me if I'm wrong, but is'nt being greek a life long commitment, if so, than why does age matter.

The other folks commenting were coming at this from a IFC/NPC perspective, which is very different.

I see that you posted in the organization's forum. It's best that you ask people that you know in real life and visit that organization's website.
Good luck to you

That is the only way that the OP can know whether there is a chance at the particular collegiate chapter.
As for the general topic, GCers, please stop telling everyone "do you really wanna hang with 18 year olds". As soon as the OP put "M.I.P." that should have told some of you that he was talking about non-NPC/non-NIC. In general, there is no age limit for the NPHC at the collegiate and alumnae/alumni/graduate levels. Individual chapter practices vary but it is not about a formal criteria or about whether a 33 year old wants to party with 18 year olds.

I humbly apologize for not knowng that MIP indicates NPHC. That is why I ASKED the question. I try my best to stay out of NPHC threads, but it can be tricky when OPs don't bother to give us enough information.

Even if it ISN'T NPHC...there are campuses out there where the average age of the members is far above 18. Reinforcing the stereotype that you join as an 18 year old only defeats all the flowery language that the NPC put out a while ago about reaching out to commuters, returning students, etc. It also doesn't help with chapter retention if you put across Greek membership as basically "just something you do until you're old enough to go to the bar."

"M.I.P."/"Membership Intake Process" is most likely NPHC just like "recruitment" is most likely NPC with no need for additional information.
If the OP was doing what he needs to do as an Omega aspirant, he would have no need to ask this question let alone ask this question to nonOmega randoms on a GLO message board. Message!

Preach!
Yet there are tons of threads in which NPC or NIC hopefuls are told that they need to give up hope and move to a deserted island if they are over a certain age or year in college.
