"OXFORD, Ohio -- Three Miami University fraternity brothers tackled a man accused of assaulting an Oxford police officer Friday night.
Ryan Hoffner, Tyler Lindroth and Charlie Nuck said they were playing Frisbee in front of their fraternity home when they saw a man beating down a police officer.
The Oxford Police Department said the officer stopped the intoxicated man walking near University Avenue and Vine Street and told him to throw away his beer, but the man jumped the officer, catching him off guard.
"Ryan was first to make the tackle, then Charlie got on top, and then I came in and held him down. All three of us held (the man) down until the officer could come and cuff him," Lindroth said.
"When he started assaulting the officer, it was definitely not right. I was taught to do the right things, and at that point, I needed to do the right thing and help out the officer," Nuck said.
"I always learned while growing up that you (should) respect cops. When we saw the scene go down, I knew we had to step in. We all know our duties, and I think this was the right one," Hoffner said.
The three said they know fraternities and sororities sometimes get a bad rap, but they also do a lot of good, including helping a police officer in trouble.
"I have great respect for law enforcement, and I would do it again in a heartbeat," Lindroth said.
Several officers and the Oxford police chief called the three students Monday to thank them for getting involved and making a positive difference, the police department said."
