Legacy Question?
Hey everyone. I did a search, but I just couldn't quite find the answer.
If my half-sister is a member of an NPC sorority, does that make me a legacy? To clarify, the daughter of my dad and my step-mom. Does it depend on the organization? I tried checking out a couple different sorority websites and it just said sisters. I didn't know if that was a lack of clarification or just meant that half siblings were not recognized. I asked my half-sister but she wasn't sure.
Thanks in advance for the answer

Generally speaking I believe it would count. It does depend on the organization whether they have specifically specified half or step sisters, but I do not know whether any actually exclude either.
For example Sigma Kappa specifically states sisters and step-sisters are legacies, as a "half-sister" is in a sense both of these I would consider my half-sister a legacy if I had one.

I did a google serach and found http://www.uncg.edu/student.groups/p...onal/faqs.html saying that half sisters were good.
I'd think it was a little ridiculous if a sorority didn't. Then again I think the whole "half sister" things are stupid. Just becasue my sister is my half sister doesn't mean i love her more or less than my full sister. "half sister" just sounds stupid IMHO.

Drolefille - Thanks for your answer I can only assume if step sisters count, that half sisters would as well.
JennyJ87 - I should have clarified. I think of my half-sisters as my sisters and of course love them just as much. I of course had to clarify to ask this question though. And the thread you provided is has information for a few sororities. Thanks
Is there anywhere else I can go with this question?

As you noted, each GLO has its own definition of what a legacy is. You would be a legacy for Alpha Delta Pi.
That noted, legacy status gives you an extra look, but there are no guarantees, especially if you're going to an SEC school.

The national website of the sorority in question may have that info.

Ok, so these are the organizations that people have confirmed that half-sisters count as legacies:
Alpha Delta Pi
Alpha Omicron Pi
Phi Mu
Sigma Kappa
I'm hesitant to contact the Greek Life office at my school, because in the past when my friends and I have relied on information from there, we are constantly getting conflicting information. Aren't these national policies, though? All my friend sorority members say they aren't sure.

They are national policies but not every sorority member knows where they are or the details of them.
Your options: Look up each chapter's nation website
Ask your friends to actually ask someone
Contact the Greek Life office/check the local chapter websites
Post the full list here and someone who is bored and possibly dodging her thesis might actually look them up for you.
Up to you.

They are national policies in many cases. Your friends may not know for sure but more than likely the recruitment chair/president knows or can find out. I only say ask your GL office because sometimes it's better to have a face-to-face talk about it, and they may know offhand anyway.
I do believe that in the eyes of Alpha Gamma Delta a half-sister is a sister and therefore you would have legacy status. I'll wait for AGDee to step in and confirm that for me, though, as "half-sister" is not an option on our Legacy Introduction Form, and I've never filled on out/dealth with legacy status as I have no female relatives (aside from my mother).

Why don't you get your half-sister to call her inter/ national headquarters and confirm that you will be considered a legacy for her organization? She will likely need to fill out a legacy confirmation form to prove your status anyway, so you need to get her involved at some point.

Added some sororities to the list after looking at the national websites.
