A Spring Recruitment Story :)
I've been lurking on this site since last semester getting recruitment tips and I loved reading all the recruitment stories, so I decided to post mine (but I wanted to wait a while after recruitment was over).
A few quick details:
-I went through recruitment this semester as a freshman
-There are 4 sororities and 3 rounds (so it went open house-4 sororities, philanthropy-3 sororities, preference-2 sororities)
-I am a legacy to 2 sororities on campus
-Recruitment is not very competitive, but not everyone has a perfect recruitment
Since it's spring, I decided to code the sororities with fun spring things!
Bubbles
Chalk
Jump-rope
Kite

Since recruitment was defered I had some pre-recruitment ideas of the different sororities:
Kite: I know a lot of members of Kite already because my cousin's girlfriend is a Kite so I used to stay with her when I visited the school (my parent's weren't too keen on the idea of me staying with my cousin at his frat house). I'm also on a sports team with one of the girls. They're fun and I already have friends there, but I'm going through recruitment to meet new people. This is also one of my legacy sororities.
Jump-rope: This is my other legacy sorority. I've seen a few around campus and they seem nice.
Chalk: This sorority is bit smaller so I hadn't met any of them before recruitment. I don't know what to think about them, but my best friend from high school joined this sorority at her school first semester and loves it.
Bubbles: I can't explain it, but I really want to be in Bubbles. They're the largest and I see them everywhere in letters. According to my cousin, they're really popular with the frats (not in a slutty way, but they're just really fun to hang-out with) and usually everyone's favorite during recruitment.

Day 1: Open House
I started at Kite. It really helped my nerves to start where I already knew many of the girls already. They led us in and showed a little 'get to know Kite' video before the sisters grabbed us for conversations. My teammate grabbed me and took me on a short house tour (the house was a lot cleaner then anytime I'd been there before). I got passed off to two other sisters during the party, and the conversations went really well, but I already knew both girls so we could skip the awkward get to know you questions. I really like these girls, but I'm going through recruitment to make new friends.
Next was Chalk. I was double rushed here. Again, a short video then taken on a house tour. The girls were nice, but awkward. The other girl I was pair with and I met like 5 sisters, so by the end of the party, we could answer any get to know you question for each other. As we were walking out, I could hear several girls in my group talking about how they couldn't wait to drop this group. I thought it was really mean of them to say (especially since I'm pretty sure the sisters could still hear us), but at the same time, I completely agreed with them.
Next we headed to Bubbles and my whole group was excited. Instead of showing a video, they did a skit that was really cute. The girl who picked me up was awesome. We ended-up having the same major so she introduced me to everyone else who the same major (interrupting other conversations). I mentioned I wanted to get involved with a club on campus and she introduced me to the girl in charge of the club. I also got a house tour, and the house was really nice and I could totally see myself living there). I left feeling super connected and hoping to return.
The last stop was Jump-rope. Most girls were double-rushed here except for me and like two other girls, which made me feel a little awkward. They were really nice and seemed really enthusiastic when talking to me. I could tell they weren't really popular, but then, I wasn't looking for popularity.
After round 1, my rankings were:
1. Bubbles
1. Kite
1. Jump-rope
2. Chalk

So I wanted to wait until the end to say this, but this story belongs to my baby sister. She promised me she'd write her story and just called me to say started last night and woke-up this morning to being accused of being someone else. She's lurked long enough to know that trying to defend yourself doesn't always work well, so I thought I'd put in a good word for PinkCupcake. PinkCupcake is a sweet 18 year-old who is extremely stable (no multi personality disorders, I promise!) and loves the sisterhood she ended-up in.

Sorry about that. It just looked suspicious. Come on over to the SK forum and introduce yourself, Pirouette!

Day 2: Philanthropy
The next day I got my schedule:
Jump-rope
Kite
Bubbles
Yay!
I know a lot about Jump-rope's philanthropy already, but I still asked questions about what they did as a chapter. Again, I got one on one attention but most PNMs did not. These girls are sweet, but I always feel really awkward around them. I don't think I'd fit in well here.
When I'm at Kite, I feel like I'm hanging out with old friends every time (probably because I already am friends with many of the girls). Their craft was cute and I had a lot of fun. But I don't need to join this sorority to be friends with them.
Yay Bubbles! We sat at tables with two PNMs and two sisters and I was having fun learning about their philanthropy until the other PNM mentioned she had already been involved with their philanthropy, so the two sisters spent the rest of the time talking to her. I tried to cut in, but it was really hard. As I left, I waved to the girl who had showed me around yesterday, but she didn't wave back (maybe she didn't see me?). Even though I didn't get much attention here, I still really want to be a Bubbles sister.
My rankings were:
1. Bubbles
1. Kite
2. Jump-rope

Day 3: Preference
I got my schedule:
Jump-rope
Kite
No Bubbles? I wasn't the only one up-set about not seeing them on their list (there were a lot of tears in the room). I thought about dropping out but my Rho Chi suggested that I at least go through preference before I made that decision.
Have you ever tried putting together a puzzle and you find two pieces that you want to put together but no matter how hard you try, they just wont fit? That's how I felt at Jump-rope. The girl I was paired with kept saying how excited she was that I was there, but I didn't really want to be there. The ceremony was nice, but I didn't feel anything. Maybe I should just drop out of recruitment and try informal in the fall for Bubbles...
I was picked-up by my cousin's girlfriend at Kite. We got some food and then headed-up to her room to talk. It was really nice because I could still joke with her instead of being all serious like it was at Jump-rope. The ceremony was nice and I even cried a bit. I looked around the room and thought, 'these girls are amazing friends, why did I ever want anything else?' As I was leaving, my cousin's girlfriend hugged me and whispered in my ear 'PinkCupcake, you've always been at Kite.' I knew she was right.
I was really torn whether I should fill out a pref card or not. I knew I didn't want to be a Jump-rope and the girls in Kite would still be my friends regardless if I joined or not. Plus, a part of me still wanted to be in Bubbles. Finally, I wrote down:
1. Kite
2.
If I got into Kite I could try it out and if I still rather be in Bubbles, I could always drop out and go through recruitment again next year. So I handed-in my pref card and headed back to my dorm.

Could Kite be Theta? Too obvious, huh.

Bid day
I couldn't concentrate on homework that night and then I could barely sleep. I never got that dreaded phone call (though my aunt scared me by calling during the hours Rho Chis were supposed to call to let us know if we didn't get a bid) so I knew where I would end-up. The next afternoon, we met at the student center for our bids and our Rho Chi reveals (mine was a Chalk). On the count of 3 we opened our bids.
1
2
3
KITE!
Everyone was screaming and excited (though there were a few disappointed girls, but they put on fake happy faces in time for bid celebrations). The Rho Chis led us all down "Greek row" stopping at each sorority to drop off new girls with now affiliated Rho Chis. On the way, we passed Bubbles and it did hurt to see all the new girls run over and join the sorority, but when I got to Kite, everything was fine. I knew these girls really wanted me as part of their sisterhood and I was glad to be a apart of it.
So who are the fabulous girls of Kite? (if you were really curious you could have checked the end of my sister's story)
