USG cuts $300 million-What will happen to our Greek life?

The University system of Georgia is proposing a $300 million cut to their universities and my campus is in an uproar! When the cuts come through alot of departments will lose part time faculty and funding. I'm worried that the cuts will include our Greek life, has anyone's college dealt with something like this?

How much money do you get from the system and for what? This obviously isn't going to have any bearing on the fees you pay to nationals. It shouldn't do anything to your rent either.

Yeah don't most schools that are publicly funded have a small Greek budget to begin with?

I'm not sure about the Greek budget (which i hope we're not being excluded from)~
In the past Pan H and IFC had houses but now they're parking lots, there was a move for housing but i dont know if the cuts will affect that too.

Our school right now is small but we're expanding. The administration really uses Greek life as part of their recruitment so i worry about raising tuition and not getting the girls we need for us to survive~

Isn't Greek Life usually funded by student fees or some other kind of assessment?

This all really depends on how your school is structured and how salaries are paid. A budget cut doesn't mean that they will close all Greek chapters (you should be self supporting organizations via dues anyway). However, it could mean that staff lose jobs...that could include your Greek Life adviser. But it also may not. It may mean that someone else in the Student Affairs/Student Life office loses their job and the Greek Adviser has to take on additional duties. It may mean that some student worker positions will be cut. It may mean that Student Life/Greek Life budgets are cut, which means your Greek Adviser can't pay for major speakers or programs or photocopies or other resources like they used to.

Our University is facing cuts as well, and when they first realized that we needed to make cuts, they asked each department to review their budget and report back areas that could be cut (based on the percentage of cut they gave us). Then a committee met and decided which cuts would be made. At this point we have lost 24 job positions (University wide, not counting faculty positions) but 12 of those were already vacant positions so they just won't be filled. Our Student Life office did not lose any positions (we did decrease the hours we have student workers), but we did get some things cut from our budget that we provided to students. So right now we just have to be careful of our purchases and operating costs.

Keep reading the newspaper and other information that the University puts out. They will start reporting areas that will be cut once they decide on them.

From the articles I have read so far the budget cuts to the UC system in California are the highest in the nation.

One TA wrote her upperdivision discussion class at UC Berkeley used to have 30 students enrolled. After the preliminary cuts she had 120 in her class this year.

At UCLA there have been huge cuts in services, TAs and many other academic areas.
