COB question

Does anyone know how popular snap bidding/cob is at Tulane? And if so would you explain it to me?

I can't think of any regular members of GC that go to Tulane. You should probably contact the Greek Life office and see if any groups are doing COB after Spring Formal Recruitment. I haven't heard any results on GC to even know if there are any chapters who didn't make total. The popularity of COB is irrelevant. COB serves a purpose of filling spots open after formal recruitment is finished.

snap bidding occurs when a chapter does not fill to quota and is limited to any women who participated in formal recruitment , but did not receive a bid. it is not an event, like cob. it happens at the end of bid matching during formal recruitment and is handled very discreetly, so that very few people would know that suzie pnm was offered a snap bid. the pnm would be called before the bid day festivities began and she would be just another member of the new member class.

Right. I dropped out though the day before pref day because no one asked me back except for the new chapter on campus and to be honest starting a new chapter wasn't really the experience I was looking for. Bid night was last night, and now all the girls are starting everything with their pledge class. From what I understand, snap bids are extended and made to look like regular bids, so no one will know the difference. Now, however, there is a chance of a lot of girls dropping out, so I was wondering how COB worked and whether snap bidding at Tulane was like at other schools, because as far as I know, bid night is a little different here.

Snap bids are given out as part of formal recruitment bid matching, so technically there are no snap bids after formal recruitment. If bid night was last night, all snap bids have been extended. It's the same everywhere.

What you are asking about is a COB bid. How that occurs does differ from school to school, but in general, only those chapters who have not reached max size (total) after formal recruitment may hold COB.

i have been an advisor for a colony and am still with the chapter today. in that time another sorority has come on campus and i believe that the campus will welcome another sorority later this year, so while i am no expert, i have seen how this works. it is more work than joining an existing chapter, in that not only are you learning the standard new member stuff, but you are also learning firsthand how the sorority operates, truly taking responsibility for the new group as it progresses from colony to chapter and assuming leadership roles which would normally not be available to you as a new member.

i can understand not wanting to work that hard, and if you are not interested you did the new group a favor, by not joining and then being dead weight, but on the other hand, i think that you missed out on a unique experience and a tight knit bond by not attending this groups pref. and seeing what they had to offer. the colonists have such a strong bond between themselves and to the sorority in general, and now they are turning into amazing advisors in their own right.

If they only colonized last fall, throwing them into January formal recruitment with the same schedule as the other groups is a bit soon IMO. It seems (per the OP's "dropping out" statement) like girls are getting a vibe of "if you don't get a bid, go to the colony" - being forced into it.

I don't blame the OP for not wanting to join them. I made a similar decision when I was rushing. If the girls would have been amazing and blown me away in earlier rounds, I might have, but the truth is I didn't like the girls enough to put up with the work.
