Anyone on here from The University of Western Ontario?

My friend and I just registered for Formal Recruitment in October, and we're looking for some information on what to expect. We have members on the Panhel Advisor Board that we could ask, but it's a little more anonymous this way

We are both more alternative than the average girl at Western, would this affect the decision making? We are both articulate, well read and classy ladies. We dress terribly well, but we tend to favour tattoos and edgy hairstyles. We would love to both be matched with a sorority, but feel this might cause some problems, as unfortunately usually this type of "self expression" tends to be taken as unprofessional, which we are actively attempting to disprove. Our faces aren't full of metal and our body art isn't at all offensive, but, you get my point.

I am also a first year student, starting at a later than typical age (23). I have worked extremely hard to get to where I am in life (leaving an abusive relationship and working my self up to where I am now from literally nothing) and I feel this shows through when I meet others.

I guess what I am asking is if anyone has any tips who has been through Rush at UWO, and tips you could give the a-typical girl (not to sterotype so boldly)?

Thanks in advance ladies!

I should have added also: If you are a more "alternative" girl who ISN'T from Western, what have your experiences been?

Well, lots of views but no feedback. Leads me to assume that I am the only "alt" girl on here. Thanks anyway, I suppose!

This is a message board, not a chatroom. People will post when they get a chance.

Well 'decision making' within sorority chapters is a private process, but honestly, appearance is a factor in any sort of first-impression type of situation. That includes anything from recruitment to job interviews. If you are dressed in a way that is different than the average student at your school, people obviously are going to notice that.

This is a good thread about appearance and recruitment, maybe it will help.

We aren't really dressed different so much as... "accessorized" differently, for lack of a better word.

Thanks for the reply though!

And knight_shadow, I'm aware it's not a chatroom

I always tell people to approach it as you would a job interview and present yourself with your best foot forward.

I'm at UBC, and we've had quite a few alternative looking girls find homes in sororities. I'm not sure what the campus is like at UWO in general, but on the West Coast it's not so unusual.

Bottom line, you won't know until you try, and even if you don't find a home in a sorority or decide you don't want to find one, you've at least met a ton of people on campus in a short amount of time.
Jen, THANK YOU for your helpful reply!

Here there is a HUGE music scene of electronica, dance and punk, so pretty much half of the students are alternative. I just haven't recalled seeing them around/in sororities... one of the frats though, hosts parties with special guests like MSTRKRFT, Steve Aoki and Crookers all the time. I talked to some of the houses today (it's Greek Week here) and they were pretty awesome and were like "Go for it!"

I plan on treating it like an interview except a little more fun, and I'm getting pretty psyched!
