Interested In Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Incorporated

Hello!

Good Evening to the Ladies of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Incorporated. I have a mild situation and i would greatly appreciate some advice. Im currently a sophomore in college and the sorority life has always interested me. However, i based my choice on the stereotypes and not really doing much research like i should have. I was told that because of my tom-boyish, laid back attitude that i would fit in with Delta Sigma Theta. so i took it into consideration and did alot of research on them and got to know them and they are very nice. But as i did research i found out that their founders were members of Alpha Kappa Alpha and that their founding date was practically given to them. I was always interested in Alpha Kappa Alpha but i felt like i wouldnt fit in because i wasnt the "prissy" type that i thought all members were. so i spent most of my time with the deltas so now i feel as though my chances of joining the chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha on my campus are ruined because i even went to a Delta interest meeting. But my dilemma is that im having trouble making a firm decision. I know what i can offer both sororities, but the main problem is that i started off interested in one sorority and now i would like to join another. did i ruin my chances??

*I have 3.4 GPA, I am very confident, and I volunteer in my free time. My life is very much so balanced between work, social life and my love life. But i feel like my credibility is shot out because of my prior interest in Delta Sigma Theta.

Wow. Apparently there's no such thing as discretion anymore.

The AKAs have a thread for interested peeps here I think:

First, this is way too much info for a public message board (ever heard of discretion?) and while you may not be trying to offend, you're leaning in that direction...big time. You clearly need to do more research if finding out this information is the only thing encouraging you to look in a different direction and leave the hearsay and stereotypes out of it. What's true for one chapter may not be true of another. And you also need to research all of the sororities, not just two. That is how people end up making mistakes and years later they come on greekchat and complain that they're in the wrong org because they didn't research all their options...yadda, yadda, yadda. This is a life decision so make it an informed one.

i apologize. i wasnt trying to offend anyone. just wanted some help and i have made the efforts to research ALL sororities. but i was only interested in those two. no offense, but i dont really understand the idea of discretion.. why should wanting to serve the community with the help of other people such a secretive thing?

Discretion doesn't mean that everything has to be a secret, it just means that it's inappropriate to come out and say that you are interested in 2 sororities and voicing some crazy AKA/DST rumor that you may have heard.

A good rule of thumb is that if you wouldn't say it to a Greek on your campus, it probably doesn't need to be posted on the interwebz.

You wouldn't walk up to an AKA or DST and SAY what you just posted, so you probably should not have posted it here.

none of the stereotypes are new. its a known fact that those are the stereotypes that people, not me, believe in. and i have a really serious question.. plz dont be offended... As i did my research i see that their main goal is to service the community.. so why is there so much "hate" between organizations if they all want to serve the same purpose? it may not be hate, but i mean the rivalry? i feel as thought there is absolutely nothing wrong with being interested in two sororities... my reason for wanting to join is to service the black community and to give back. and i believe both organizations do that. so why not be interested in more than one?

This is a big misconception. Being secretive and being discrete are two different things. When you are being secretive, you're trying not to say anything to anyone but when you are being discrete, you are careful about what you say and to whom you say it. You came here to get an answer to a question (which anyone in this forum can answer) and you say things that are likely to offend whether you meant to or not. Re-read your thoughts and you'll see how members might take it. You can be discrete by not providing so many details. Also, when you are new to an online community you need to observe first before jumping in and posting. If you do a search, you'll find that many questions like yours don't get answered. Keep in mind that no one is obligated to answer your questions; we come here to chat with one another (members of GLOs that is).

You could have simply stated that you were interested in XYZ sorority based on stereotypes and now you are interested in ABC sorority but everyone knows that you were first interested in XYZ sorority. What are your chances... You could insert any org and it would still be the same.

I thought we were talking about discretion. No one said anything about being interested in 2 organizations and I don't know where the talk about hate between orgs is coming from (and by the way, that's a big misconception also). You are encouraged to research all the organizations but the orgs frown upon openly pursuing more than one. That's just the way it is...has nothing to do with any org hating another. Sounds like you don't understand greek life among the NPHC but you're not supposed to until you become a member (if you become a member).

Honestly, you're not ready for either of these organizations. In all that you wrote, not once did you mention attending any programs outside of an interest meeting. Your interest was sparked by the opinions of others who by the sound of it aren't in either/any organization. Even your change of mind sounds as if it was inspired by an outsider's opinion. "...their founding date was practically given to them." Where did you do your "research"? All of the NPHC sororities have rich histories rooted in sisterhood and service. What exactly is it that you're looking for here? We can't tell you how to rebuild your credibility if it's been lost. I'd recommend searching the threads for questions that have been asked before, and be sure to follow the link that KSUViolet posted.

Calm down. That wasn't a ding against you. We always say IF around here because we don't want to be presumptuous and neither should you. You can be super qualified and if the members don't select you, you don't get in. Period.
