Kappa Alpha Theta suspended after reports of hazing; no students injured

An OSU sorority is under interim suspension after witnesses reported seeing 17 students involved in hazing, said the OSU director of communications.
Gary Shutt said the Kappa Alpha Theta chapter’s conduct is under investigation after nonmember witnesses notified university officials of an outdoor incident about 12:30 a.m. Wednesday.
Shutt declined to comment about the details of the incident because it’s under investigation. However, Shutt said no one was injured, and the police were not notified. The students might be expelled, depending on the outcome of the investigation. The university is interviewing all students involved, Shutt said.

Theta freshmen to participate in Follies despite suspension

Freshman members of Kappa Alpha Theta will still participate in Freshman Follies despite the sorority’s interim suspension, said the OSU director of communications.
Gary Shutt said after discussions among the President’s office, Student Affairs, Campus Life and Greek Life, officials decided to allow the freshmen members to participate. However, the upperclassmen directors for the event are suspended from all activities.
“We did not feel it was fair to penalize students who were the alleged victims in the incident, nor was it fair to penalize other freshman members of the sorority not involved in the incident and their fraternity partner (Fiji),” Shutt said.

OSU sorority on probation until May

The OSU chapter of Kappa Alpha Theta is on probation until May 9, 2009, following an investigation by the university that stemmed from an alleged hazing incident involving 17 members.

The university issued individual sanctions for nine upperclassmen sorority members who were involved in the incident, which occurred on campus during the early morning hours of Oct. 22.
