Do you do volunteer work?
We're all really involved in our GLOs, but I was just wanted to see where else some of you GCers volunteer.
I volunteer with the local USO chapter. I firmly believe in supporting our troops and making sure they know how much America appreciates them. Most recently, I worked at a carnival for deployed soldier's kids. Over Spring Break, instead of going on vacation, I'll be working with other volunteers at the USO Lounge in our local airport. We chat with and hand out food/snacks to soldiers and their families while they are waiting on their flights overseas or to any of the US bases.

Most likely starting this month, I will be volunteering at the animal shelter. I have been given one condition...I am not allowed to bring any animals home

I volunteered a couple of places in Boston, but haven't found any place around here yet. That, and I don't have any free time right now, although that may change a bit this summer.

I signed up for Oklahoma Lawyers for Children.
Never showed up though. I'll probably do things for them once I can do real lawyer stuff. Until then, I'm not too keen on performing kinship home assessments and intake interviews at the juvenile center.

I'd like to volunteer with the SPCA in my area, but for some reason, you need to provide your SSN on the application. That was a turn off for me because I've already had issues with someone trying to use my identity before. I just think that's very personal info to be asking.
I may try another local shelter... so we'll see.

I do not do any volunteer work at the moment. Due to the nature of my job- a children's librarian at a public library with a large population that needs my interpreter/translation services- I do not have much time or energy (physical and mental) left afterwards. I do donate money and material goods to causes I support. I even purchased a flock of ducks from Heifer International last month; plus I give financially at church and the focus school that I was assigned to work with at my job, and give clothes and books and food when the opportunity arises.
I admire those of you who volunteer very very much- but I can't be one of you at the moment. After my job and school, exercise comes first- and I have to make time for other hobbies, some of which (like art and music) I have not done much for recently due to otherwise being so busy.

Before the kids were born, I volunteered heavily--I've been a Girl Scout leader since 1970. Now I mostly volunteer for things our children are involved in...we also work in the Hispanic community and do some animal rescue. As I speak, we have a couple of Guatemalan kids here whose mother leaves them with us without warning (we like the kids but that stinks) and a dog whose owner has dumped him.

I keep my volunteering (other than for Alpha Gam) to things that allow me to spend the time with my kids. So, I've been a Cub Scout leader and our pack's Advancement Chair for the last 5 years. My son is moving up to Boy Scouts and, although I'll be a driver for things and stuff, I am not going to volunteer for any formal position. I'm kind of burned out on that. My daughter is also a Girl Scout and I don't have a formal position but am one of the few "involved" parents. That means I do the cookie booths, drive the girls places, attend meetings when other leaders can't be there, etc. Between working full time, managing the kids and helping my mom on weekends AND the Alpha Gam stuff, I'm stretched now.

Besides AOII volunteering I've been involved in Scouting for over 10 years now. My youngest bridges over into Boy Scouts at the end of the month, so I'll also be transitioning then (while Dad happily remains as Assistant Cubmaster).

I participate in adoptaplatoon.org. While I was active duty, I had random penpals who sent me letters and care packages while I was overseas on deployment. I vowed that I would do the same thing for other servicemembers when I got out. I've been out of the navy for almost 4 years now, and I'm currently sponsoring my 5th service member who I try to send care packages to on a monthly basis.
