All NPCs active in only 5 states

I ran across an interesting statistic: There are only five states in which there are ACTIVE chapters of all 26 NPC sororities, and some probably aren't the states you would guess. They are Indiana, Michigan, New York, Pennsylvania and Virginia. Four other states (Florida, Illinois, Texas & Wisconsin) are missing one group; and three (California, Massachusetts & Ohio) are missing two. Even more surprising, 14 states have less than half of the NPC sororities.

Not really surprised about Indiana since Indiana University has 22 of the 26 NPCs and 8 of the divine 9! Of the four IU doesn't have two of them are at IUS and the other two are at USI!

I'm more surprised by Massachusetts than any other state on the list.

I think Penn State will be 19 when DPhiE recolonizes, if they haven't already. Illinois is at 19. Indiana will be 23 when Sigma Kappa recolonizes in Jan. 2016.

Yes, but not that many have NPC orgs, and Greek life isn't as big in the northeast as it is in other parts of the country.


ETA: Per irishpipes' thread, there are 18 schools in MA with NPCs. Boston University has the most chapters with 10. Northeastern has 8. And 10 of those schools have 3 chapters or less.

Comparatively, there aren't that many active chapters total in the state, and yet it covers almost all NPCs.


ETA again:

Boston University and Northeastern cover 16 NPCs all on their own… and if Chi Omega colonizes at Northeastern, that makes 17!

New York doesn't surprise me, their state University network alone is massive.

I'm always surprised at how many sororities & fraternities are in Pennsylvania. My personal guess is a) There's a boatload of schools there; and b) It's not Northeast, it's not South, it's not Midwest - it's sort of a crossroads state.

I think what shocks me the most about PA is its thriving Greek communities at a lot of smaller and/or lesser-known schools. Look at Thiel College for example: 1,100 undergraduates and they have 4 NPCs and 4 NICs which consistently do well.

ETA: I just saw St. Joseph's University, as well. There are 4,900 undergraduates, 5 NPCs, and total is at 156.

Gettysburg College is another: 2,700 students, 5 NPCs (with a new colony in the fall), and quota is hovering around 30.

There are too many examples to name them all.

Boston is the biggest college city in the world. (But I'm pretty sure that stat includes neighboring cities such as Cambridge, so this brings in MIT, Harvard, etc., in addition to schools actually located in Boston, like BU.)

Alpha Sigma Alpha (had chapters at BU, Bentley, and North Adams State)
Phi Mu (had a chapter at UMass Amherst)
