Montana sex education proposal draws outrage

HELENA, Mont. — A proposed sex education curriculum in Montana is drawing outrage because it would teach young children about subjects such as gay sex.
Under the proposal for the Helena school district, kindergartners would be taught proper anatomical terms, first-graders would learn sexual relations could happen between two men or two women, and fifth-graders would learn the various ways people can have intercourse.
More than 300 people attended a school board meeting Tuesday and about 65 people commented on the proposed curriculum.
Supporters say the proposed health education curriculum contains honest, science-based information on wellness and allows students to make decisions that are better for themselves and the community.

I'm all for sex education (I went through it), but all of that isn't necessary. Anatomy? Sure. Safe sex? Absolutely. The difference between a threesome and an orgy? Go 'head and leave that to the parents.

I suspect that means teaching what is PIV, oral, anal, digital sex. Not positions. But I need more than a paragraph article. Funny though, they're more upset about the OMG gay sex.

And for better or worse, fifth graders need to know because some of them are already doing it.

Sadly so. I often wonder why that is and why such major changes in seemingly a short period of time.

When I was in 5th grade I hadnt grasped the whole sexual concept, nor was I really interested in boys. I was still playing with my barbies and Pleasant Company dolls in 5th grade!

It's the culture these kids are growing up in, everything is so edgy now compared to when we were kids. Remember when Britney Spears circa 1999 was considered a "bad influence" on girls? Compare 1999 Britney to Ke$ha or Lady GaGa and she's a goody two shoes.

1999 Britney was 16-ish, though. Ca$hew and GaGa are in their 20s. Me thinks it's lazy parents.

But I'm sure when you were in 5th grade there were some girls who were already having sex. Things haven't changed that much. There are still plenty of girls interesting in "kid" things still in 5th grade and others are doing very "adult" things. Once they hit middle school in 6th grade though... smh. (LOL) We didn't have middle school when I was a kid, we had junior high. Junior high started in 7th grade. We were still of the elementary mentality in 6th grade. I'm not sure I think middle school is a great concept, personally.

I don't think it is.

In fact, in DC, many of the former elementary schools have become "education campuses" which house Early Childhood/Pre-School (three year olds) all the way up to 8th grade. If a kid gets left behind once and has a late(early?) birthday, you're looking at potential 15 year olds in the same building as 3 year olds and everything in between.

Two were actually. One I think was because she had messed up ideas--found out years later she had been sexually abused by her father throughout childhood. Her mother knew it, and allowed it to continue. I remember in school too she was the first one to start wearing a bra and get her period as well which was around 4 or 5th grade. This girl was very sweet and a friend of mine, though sex was never ever brought up until middle school when everyone talks about it. She moved away in 7th grade and we lost touch. I often think of how she is doing now.

The other was not a shock to anyone. All of her family members had dropped out of high school and got pregnant & married young. This girl followed family tradition by dropping out of school in 9th grade. She later got her GED, however she has been working low wage jobs since--McDonalds & a mom & pop gas station back home. We were friends in elementary school, but I was never allowed to spend the night at her home. Random people were always in and out and her parents were never seemingly home. She lived two doors down from the girl mentioned above.

My mother and my sister were both at the early end of Puberty. My sister was in a *real* bra when she started 4th grade, and I'm pretty sure that she had started her period (at least brown-spotting) before the end of 3rd grade (she turned 9 before the end of 3rd grade).

There is a difference in the races as well, African-Americans tend to start pubertly earlier than Caucasians, who tend to be earlier than East Asians.
