Draw Mohammad Day

Facebook has about 7,000 + pictures. Some are pretty funny. This does not link to Facebook only the article about the controversy.

This. Why respond to idiots by acting like one?

And while I think the reaction to certain cartoons was way beyond rational or appropriate, I usually try not to go out of my way to insult other people's religious beliefs.

Unless, of course, the religion in question is Scientology.

Some people just like to instigate.

Ha! Scientology is a religion?

I do believe the instigating factor is South Park's possible hypocrisy in all this. They cover up the Mohammad cartoon but Jesus, Buddha and other religions are fair game. They are either cowards or geniuses. Since I don't watch the show I have no idea which it is.

So they say (in order to get tax-exempt status as a church).

Is that really hypocrisy? Christianity and Buddhism have no proscription against images of Jesus or the Buddha respectively; in fact, both historically encourage such images (but would have a problem with desecration of those images -- think Andres Serrano and his "Piss Christ"). Islam, on the other hand, traditionally does have such a proscription.

I mean granted, I know it's South Park, so there's no reason to assume they're acting out of noble urges, but there is a difference.

Precisely, it's just instigation. If i had a good reason to draw Mohammad I would, if not then i'm just being a pest.

Also cosign the scientology. Thetans? Realllly?

Because they charge money for access to higher levels of their religion they have had their status challenged but yes they are a 'religion.'

They actually showed Mohammad, Jesus, etc. in an episode called Super Best Friends (think Justice League of religions). Then there was (this gets complicated) an episode about (fictional) Family Guy and how it was going to show Mohammad and whether or not they should censor it and then it was censored on the episode of (fictional) Family Guy on South Park, but it wasn't censored IN the episode just to us. In short the kids saw it, we didn't.

See, complicated.

It isn't Matt and Trey doing the censoring though, but Comedy Central/Viacom. And when they make fun of religion, which is frequently, it's not about the beliefs as much as it is about the institution/believers. Jesus on South Park has/had talk show and really just wanted people to listen to him, he would occasionally get killed but would come back to life. Disrespectful? Yeah maybe, but not being mocked. Compare to the episodes about the Easter bunny, child molesting priests, etc.

Ditto!!!!!

I do condone Family Guy and South Park jokes on every religion. That is hilarious and equal opportunity clowning. Amen.

True the above.

I do believe that there is a slippery slope with someone/group/entity skewering one religion and fearing another.

Umm it wasn't South park that covered it up, it was Comedy Central. Mainly because they were afraid of the reprecussions. The creators came out against Comedy Central for doing it.
