UC Merced

I know that within the past few years the University of California inaugurated its ninth undergraduate campus in Merced.

I was just wondering if any Greek Letter Organizations have been formed at the Merced campus. I couldn't tell when I made a quick look on the UC Merced web site.

Just being nosy...

I heard that a fraternity was starting (maybe search the colonies thread) and I know some girls are trying to bring an NPC chapter there. Not sure how that's going.

ETA: It's Sigma Chi

There is none at this time, but according to this article (I think it's from last year), it's something they're looking into:

Merced groups

I just did a presentation to the groups that are trying to organize on campus. None have officially been recognized by the campus or National Organizations as colonies, but there are 4-5 initial interest groups.

Some of the chapters that they are trying to start are:

Sigma Chi -
Sigma Alpha Epsilon
Kappa Kappa Gamma
Kappa Delta Chi
Delta Delta Delta

If I get any further information on them i will update.

Colonies at UCM

Hey everyone!

Here's an update:

The Epsilon Kappa Chapter of Delta Delta Delta was just recently installed over January 30th thru the 31st.

Kappa Delta Chi has broken up and decided to go in search of another sorority (after being colonized) due to little support from NALFO.

Delta Gamma has been colonized.

Kappa Kappa Gamma has been colonized.

Sigma Chi has been colonized.

And, Sigma Alpha Epsilon has been colonized.

Woot woot for greek life at UCM!

Can't believe I missed this before...WHAAAAAT?

I've never heard of an individual chapter (or organization) disband because of lack of support from NALFO. There must be more to the story. Most of our orgs. were here before NALFO and did fine without it (just my opinion).

UC Merced Greek Life??

I just noticed on Kappa's website that UC Merced (which I've never heard of...) is colonizing Kappa. I checked the UC Merced website and I noticed it said that many greek organizations are colonizing there. I was just wondering what other IFCs and NPCs are colonizing there. Anybody know anything??

They talked about this in the Colonies/Expansion thread...but this is what TSteven said:

Quote:
UC Merced was established in 2005 and is starting Greek Life from the ground up this school year (2008-2009). In addition to Delta Delta Delta and Kappa Kappa Gamma, Sigma Chi Fraternity has a colony. I believe Sigma Alpha Epsilon also has a colony at Merced. And I have heard - but it might just be a rumor - that Alpha Chi Omega was invited as well.

UC Merced is a newer campus that originally targeted upperclass students. With the addition of freshmen, they decided to go all out and become a more traditional campus with more housing and GL. A full athletic department is also in the works.

NPCs chartering next semester are DG, DDD and Kappa.

UC Merced is the newest school in the University of California system. California has two "systems" - the UC (Cal, UCLA, etc) and the California State system. The UC system takes only the top 10% of graduating students and the Cal States top 25%. Whether you are admitted depends upon your gpa as well as how close you live to the school you would like to attend. There are four UC's and six Cal State schools that are "impacted" (what school is not these days?) and the majority of their students are within a certain radius. Outside of their "zones" you really have to be the top 1-2%.

UC Merced admitted its first students the fall of 2005. It is located in the California central valley outside of Stockton. It is WAY out of town, but lots of room to grow. I believe the majors are mostly math and science based. Probably a great place to colonize as there will not be much else. However, UC Irvine used to be "way out" and now it is in the middle of everything!

Proximity to a campus has nothing to do with whether a student is admitted to that campus (for the UC system). Also, only out of state applicants really need to be in the top 1-2%, not in-state applicants. In state applicants should be in the top 12.5%, although I would highly recommend that students try to be in the top 5% of graduating seniors in California, given the competitiveness of the admissions process, and the fact that most campuses will be accepting fewer students due to the CA state budget crisis.

Delta Gamma is also one of the first 3 NPC groups that will colonize in January to start the Merced PH system.
