Pref ideas
I realize there are lots of threads out there giving general ideas about pref, but i kind of need more specific suggestions. I know Pref ceremony's are sometimes sorority specific, but any thing you can throw out would be great!
I'm apply for Pref Chair for my chapter (LSU) and I'd really like to update our preference ceremony!
I attend LSU and we have huge rush. Our Pref parties I think will have about 70 girls at each.
I'm looking for ideas and information about YOUR preference ceremony (or ones you held as an active).
Did yall do poems? Songs? Personal Stories?
HELP! any, any, any suggestions you can throw at me would be greatly appreciated.
Also, any party planners out there I'd love some tips on creating ambiance.
If you message me, I'll share some info on our past pref ceremonys. I'm going to post this on a different section as well.
Thanks
AND ANY THETAS OUT THERE, I'D REALLY REALLY LOVE TO HEAR FROM YOU. I've posted this on our Theta section as well.

These threads are great! They're making me hungry.
I have made an effort to read what was already out there about pref, so i'd love to hear new things, about your personal experience (if you don't feel comfortable talking about your chapter, maybe yall remember some things from when you attended prefs at other houses)
Thanks yall!

The best thing for you to do is talk to girls in your chapter about what they've liked/disliked about past pref parties.
I'd also suggest talking to your newest girls (the girls you got during formal recruitment 2008). They can tell you what parts of the pref ceremony were meaningful to them.
Also, I find that alot of times, new officers/party chairs/etc. want to change things around and add new stuff to parties all the time. That's cool, but remember that just because you've done the same poem/ceremony/whatever FOREVER doesn't mean you have to change it. If it has been something that PNMs remember and girls say that it means alot to them, then consider keeping it.

100% agree. I think the majority of NPCs have a ceremony or two that they want you to do anyways, so changing it too much way go against your recruitment advisor's wishes.
I think that the ceremony is only as good as the conversation preceding it. I think many people in retrospect will say that the ceremonies they saw at the time were kind of hokey, but at the moment they were so caught up in the beauty of the sisterhood in the room that they bawled anyways and thought the ceremony was lovely. Make sure that the conversation is strong and the right connections are being made. If that is the case, a well rehearsed hokey-pokey could win PNMs over.

Another thing to watch out for is to make sure that preference night doesn't become another skit night. Fight the urge to have too many speeches/songs, ceremonies. A good rule would be that for any new thing you put in, remove one old thing that has gotten lukewarm reception. Also, don't try anything too complicated without it being well thought out, for instance, one pref we got record number of returns and we did not have room and one our portions of pref just did not work with more than 15 girls in the room and we were at 23-25. So make sure it's adaptable if something changes as well

It's fine to pull at the heartstrings a little, but please...don't make things too emotional! PNMs are emotional messes already by that point in the week. A song and a (short!) speech is fine, but please don't overdo it. Also, don't put inside jokes into the speeches in your ceremony...the PNMs will be turned off.
Also, if you serve food, serve nothing ingredients that people are commonly allergic too (nuts, seafood, ect). I'm allergic to seafood, and at the first pref I went to, I couldn't eat some of their pretty little quiche type things because it contained shellfish (glad I asked!).
