Hannah Montana in Vanity Fair

Vanity Fair shots of Hannah Montana star cause scandal

By Anita Singh, Showbusiness Editor
Last Updated: 9:46am BST 29/04/2008

Annie Leibovitz, the celebrity photographer, has been accused of "manipulating" a 15-year-old pop star into posing semi-naked for Vanity Fair magazine.

Miley Cyrus, a teen idol and star of the Disney Channel show Hannah Montana, was pictured apparently topless, with a satin bedsheet protecting her modesty.

Miley Cyrus has maintained a squeaky-clean image
Exclusively for Vanity Fair by Annie Liebovitz. The June issue of Vanity Fair hits newstands on May 1st

Initially, Cyrus declared herself happy with the shot, declaring it "really artsy".

Thoughts? I work in a bookstore; I'm horrified to think of the, er, new customers Vanity Fair will get for this issue.

OMG ANNIE LIEBOVITZ TOOK EDGY PICTURES I'M SOOOO SHOCKED!!

SRSLY? I mean, I think even my dad knows that if AL does your shoot she's going to push a boundary or two. If you're not comfy with that, go to Olan Mills or something.

Exactly. And it's Vanity Fair. Not exactly 'Teen, you know...

I think the photo is very elegant - but it is of a girl of 15. Shame on her parents for leaving her alone with AL and not thinking Miley would be talked into something like this!

It's her age that bothers me, not the photo.

Honestly, I don't think the photo is really that flattering. And from what I read, her parents were there through almost all the photo shoot. They left and a few final photos were taken, including the controversial one.

I don't think Vanity Fair is the proper media venue for a 15-year-old Disney sweetheart, but obviously her manager thought it was okay.

I think the photo was fine. I'm really not even fussed that she's only 15, I mean, she's a 15 year-old who attends red carpet events and is growing up in Hollywood. She's going to be a little more cosmopolitan and sophisticated than a young lady growing up out of the spotlight. If I hadn't heard so much about it I might have thought it was just a strapless, low backed shirt. Further, her fan base doesn't exactly read Vanity Fair. The only reason they're interested now is the media firestorm.

Quite frankly, I find the picture of her laying across her father in a midriff shirt far creepier.

Ewww, she's 15! Hey, I know of a compound in Texas you might like to visit...

Is it me, or does she look really, really young in that last ("controversial") shot? I normally don't have an issue with even younger stars taking pictures like this (because they seem to be the standard thing to do and they usually make them up to look 24 anyway), but her face in that picture REALLY looks like a little girl to me and that's what I think makes this shot a little on the creepy side. And she's either got to admit she's trying to break out of the "all-G" image she has or just stop doing photo shoots like this and putting stuff up on her myspace (her parents or agents should just shut that thing down) if she is really trying to preserve her current image, because she can't have both in the long run.

I think the point is....it is her manager and/or parents who need to be raked over the coals for their bad choice....not Annie Liebovitz or Vanity Fair.

Obviously. She won't be 15 forever. And Disney kids seem to end the most messed up, this might actually be a good career move.

I'm sure we'll know when we see the sales figures for her next album/movie/franchise thing they sell to teenagers

lol. I agree. I couldn't imagine taking a picture like that with my dad. I think he'd be all awkward and weird about it the whole time. That photo looks more like a couple's engagement photo rather than a picture of a father and daughter.
