So is it impossible for GC moderators to rename threads if they take a 10 page detour to a more important topic? With exception of a few posts, everything was civil in that thread.

If the original topic no longer matters (if SEC's visiting chapter has visiting then...now what? The OP wasn't the one screaming for the OT) then why can't more important things be discussed?

Can threads not be split by moderators as they are on other boards?

If we kept typing in the "Visiting Chapters" thread, you would lock it but does that really matter when the visiting chapter has visited, anyway? Do other threads that are no longer relevant get locked, too? No.

This isn't about "free speech." This is about making sense of the little rules. If moe.ron says "because I say so" then I'll just conclude he/she's lame and knows the rule doesn't make sense.

If not, use your brain and reading skills to do so.

And come again with a better response after you do so.

Now, if you don't know the answers to my question (about threads being split (and of course the new topic being moved)), just say so. A moderator shouldn't be moderating if she/he doesn't know those basic answers--or isn't able to direct the question appropriately.

It's totally possible to split threads, most mods just don't want to take the time to do it.

I have no idea what happened with the thread in question, but I did want to say that it IS possible. Most mods would rather just delete or lock a thread than actually deal with it so that the productive stuff is still accessible and able to be discussed.

I've since merged the racial issues branch of that thread with its spin-off in the News & Politics forum as that seemed to be the best location for it.
