90210: The Next Generation?

Quote:
The most popular ZIP code on television is coming back.

The CW is developing a contemporary spinoff of Aaron Spelling's seminal 1990s teen soap "Beverly Hills, 90210."
Darren Star Apparently Not Involved

Hit or miss? What do you think?

Not sure, I guess it would depend on the way they approach it. If it's more of a sequel type spin-off vs. a spin-off with just the same environment it may not work.

People are still interested in the lives of the priveledged, this just has be another look into it, not let's bring back the Peach Pit gang thing.

I kind of thought that whole Laguna Beach/Hills thing had filled that niche for the new generation. It will be interesting, though, if they bring any 90210ers along. I predict Ian Ziering, he's been at a standstill since the show went off and even DWTS didn't seem to give him the "bump" it's given some others career-wise.

Not everything has to be remade and applied to a new generation.

The new generation had The OC and those other shows. No need.

Plus 90210 was an Aaron Spelling (R.I.P.) invention and his mold has already been used and exhausted.

90210 started so many careers. Leave it alone, people.

I agree. I would so much rather have them create a new similar show than make a "90210 remake". It's so annoying to have one person fromn the old show (probably Steve Sanders) and all new students....plus those shows never so very well. Didn't anyone learn anything from Saved by the Bell: The New Class??? haha

it worked for Degrassi... maybe the neighbors up north know something we dont?

and yeah, SBTB:TNC was awful. not that i didnt watch it. but the magic was gone.

but youre better off bring Tori Spelling back, i mean, she saw both SBTB and 90210 through. has she no cred amongst you folk?

I watched SBTB: TNC only because of Screech (who, in real life is apparently a complete moron).

and furthermore, the topics show like these covered 10-15 years ago to teens aren't gonna be able to touch what needs to be addressed now. the most "serious" topics on SBTB (teen parenthood, smoking a joint in the bathroom, gasp, being poor. even the eating disorder and drug addiction turned into a big joke - i can't even LOOK at Elizabeth Berkeley anymore without an onset of giggling fits) are still serious, but youre not going to be able to center an episode around a first date, the first time, getting a driver's license or even the parentals going away for the weekend and having a kick-ass party, all to be grounded for breaking grandma's china and of course, breaking the rules.

to me, what 90210 did for teen dramas (even for its time, there werent as many) is kinda what Degrassi claims to do, being all "intense" and "going there." a remake isnt going to do much more. a washed up Steve Sanders as the school guidance counselor to kids dealing with "todays issues" (which i imagine are STDs, suicide, school shootings, poverty, drug use/dealing, internet drama, mental health) isnt going to work.

ETA: and what would a new set of rich kids from CA offer without it turning into Laguna Beach/The Hills/Sweet 16/Gossip Girl? i know the "pretty rich kids with problems" TV genre is popular and all, but sheesh.

(a lot of this is from my UG thesis, so pardon my enthusiasm)

SO true. When I was in college he came to do "stand-up" one night on campus. It was painful to watch. He kept saying "c*ck" (aka rooster) just randomly over and over....it was soooooo awful and not remotely funny. And then the whole sex tape thing. Ew.

As for Tori on 90210: the new class (haha) I would totally watch that. Even if it's just for the trainwreck value.

hmm i dont know... Tori is all lovey-dovey with that Dean guy running their inn right? She's busy. Ian's got that "Mama Don't Dance" show (which is a REALLY annoying title for the show - i wouldve really enjoyed "Shake What Ya Mama Gave Ya") so he's busy.

Hey, what's Gabrielle doing? Lord knows she could play some principal/guidance counselor.

Tori and Dean actually aren't running the B&B anymore...I heard it's because she's back in her mama's good graces so now doesn't need the income. The funny thing is, I thought they bought the B&B but I drove by it recently (to a friend's weekend house) and it's back to its old name (Oak Creek Manor). Apparently they never bought it but leased it with the option to buy. It's for sale now though for a mere 2.3-2.65 million dollars. haha

Andrea's daughter would be about high school age now...maybe it'll be about her!
