not sure what to rush.. help?
Hey guys! This is my first post on here. I'm a currently a freshmen and I plan on rushing this fall (my sophomore year). Even though I'm totally sold on Greek life, I'm torn on what sorority to join.. My mom was a Delta Zeta but I'm not 100% sure I want to go that route. I'm kind of stuck between:
Delta Zeta
Alpha Delta Pi
Zeta Tau Alpha
Kappa Delta (I believe this is the new being added to my school next year)
Could anyone tell me a little about what the girls in each sorority stand for? Because I know girls in all of them (except KD, I'm not totally sure if it'll be on my campus) but I'm just having such a hard time deciding. I guess I need help? Please let me know!!

That is what recruitment is for.
If you're looking for stereotypes, A) we don't know where you go to school, B) most GCers know that posting stereotypes is in poor taste, and C) there aren't "National" stereotypes because every NPC has strong and weak chapters.
ETA: If you want to know about the sororities on a(n) (inter)national level,
Alpha Delta Pi
Delta Zeta
Zeta Tau Alpha
Most women who join NPC chapters typically choose the chapter at their school that is the best fit, although it is common to take the (inter)national organization's values and history into consideration.
Also, just a guess, but I think you have more chapters at your school than those 3, so you should really keep your options open.

And... you already know girls in all of the chapters, you said, so talk to them. They know your school, the campus and greek life and ... themselves ... that's a pretty good jumping off point. And violet's right, everything else will fall into place during rush next fall.

- Visit the national web sites of each group. Visit the web sites of each local chapter.
- If KD is colonizing, it will probably occur after Formal Recruitment has ended, although they may participate in the first rounds of Recruitment.
- Get your resume in order.
- Get professional headshots (photos) made, if required by your school's Panhellenic office.
- Get your letters of introduction (aka 'recs') lined up and sent in this summer.
- Relax and enjoy the process.

Remember, recruitment is mutual selection. The choice is not entirely up to you. Also, are you saying that the four listed are the only chapters to choose from or are there others?

So far everyone has given you great advise. My suggestion that I give every perspective new member is simply this, If you can walk into their chapter room/house/suit and know that you could call it "Home" for the rest of your life, that is where you belong.
Good luck and let us know the outcome!

You've been given great advice. I just want to add to follow your heart - what may have been right for your mother just may not be right for you. On the other hand, if it IS the right fit all around, you & your mother will have a wonderful bond! This from someone who was sure she was going to pledge XYZ, and fell in love with ABC!

This is exactly what sorority recruitment is for! Go through recruitment at your school--- this will be just the opportunity to meet with and interview at the sororities at your school. This will help you and the sororities decide where you fit the best, or whether or not to join at all. It is a mutual selection process, so the interview process will not only help you see which sorority you might enjoy the most, but it will also help the sororities get to know you and decide whether or not they would like to invite you to join. Good luck-- enjoy the rest of your freshman year.

I know when I went through Formal Recruitment (we can't call it "Rush" anymore... you will learn that with Greeks everything is semantics) I was sold on a different group every night! One night I wanted XYZ, the next I knew that I wanted ZYX, the next ABC!
So don't decide right now. You don't want to be disappointed if the group you've had your heart set on decides not to extend a bid to you (yes, it does happen).
But again you really have to go through recruitment to see which group you would like because its those girls you'll be meeting, not your mother's sisters from her time in college! Chapters do change every year.
You'll know which one is for you when the time comes. Enjoy recruitment!

Reason: Inaccurate information regarding membership selection.

Legacies are extended certain "courtesies" (depending on the group) and considered important but by no means does the legacy have an "in" nor does the group have to feel more inclined to extend her a bid.

Every chapter of every house is very different so I would wait until Rush, meet the girls and decide which route you want to go. Don't set your heart on one, keep an open mind! Just because XYZ is a certain way at one school, doesn't necessarily mean the girls are the exactly the same at your school. Just as an example, my sorority does events time to time with another chapter in our state, and although we are all part of the same national sorority (Delta Zeta), the girls in the two chapters are INCREDIBLY different. We're the more laid back, easy going girls and they are more sophisticated, girly types.
Anyway..
All those have great national organizations. Just figure out which chapter works for you! =)
