Looking for Atlanta eateries and things to do...

I'm going to Atlanta this coming weekend (10/19-20) and I'm looking for a couple of things...

1. I'm staying in downtown for a work conference and was looking for a restaurant that would be able to accomodate 25 or so folks. Nothing on the high end scale, but no mcdonalds either. Anything uniquely Atlanta would be nice. A short MARTA trip is ok as well, but we won't have access to enough cars for all the people.

2. I'm looking for something to with my wife on Saturday afternoon. Any cool places to visit that you would recommend? I have a car so I'm not limited by MARTA stops. And I'm not afraid of traffic...

http://www.redchairatlanta.com/ <----- I had a mini-reception there when I visited Atlanta in 2005. It was cool.

Dave,
There is a wonderful, traditional Southern restaurant called "Pittypat's Porch" that's in downtown Atlanta. It's been there as long as I can remember......I lived in Atl from 92-99 and my mom lived there from 67-68 and SHE remembers eating there!

Another Atl "institution" is The Varsity, which is across the highway from Georgia Tech....but that's nothing upscale at all, but it is an experience!

As for something to do with your wife, think about visitin "The World of Coca-Cola", which is an interactive museum dedicated to Coke, which was founded right there in Atlanta! There is also Undergroun Atlanta, which is a shopping/eating place they built in the old underground train tunnels!

There's so much to see......visit the visitor's bureau and they'll help you plan your visit!

Have fun!!

Try the South City Kitchen in Midtown for an gourmet twist to traditional southern cooking. As for doing something with your wife....the Georgia Aquarium is a 'must see' attraction. I have been to many aquariums and this one blew me away. There is a new World of Coke being built right next to the aquarium but I don't know if it is open yet. Also, in the same area are the CNN headquarters and you can take a tour of the studios. There are many great restaurants in Atlanta, one of which sits atop the Westin hotel and rotates 360 dgs every hour. Also, the High Museum of Art is featuring an exhibit called the Louvre and the Ancient World, featuring works on loan from the Louvre in France.

As an Atlantan myself (but not native like 90% of people living in Atlanta, LOL) I would agree with the places WarEagle07 described.
The new World of Coke is open now, has been for a few months. I hear it's nice. The Aquarium is awesome as well. Be prepared to pay about $20-something for a ticket but it's worth it.
The CNN Center tours are nice as well. And visit Centennial Olympic Park across the street. However the fountains are off for the year...but still very nice.
The great thing about the "A" is that there are lots of good places to eat--there's something for everybody. I personally don't like the food at the Varsity, but it is an experience to be had if you visit. Some people love it. I think I'm in the minority.

Atlanta

Welcome to Atlanta. A really fun place to go to is called "Fat Matt's Rib Shack" http://www.fatmattsribshack.com/ It's not upscale, but its fun to go to at night- they always have bands. Walk around the Highlands and go to Paulo's. As for downtown...I really liked going to CNN. I was a little disappointed in the aquarium, though...

Whever I get back to Atlanta I always go to Murphy's in Virginia Highlands. Great food in a laid-back neighborhood spot.
