Birmingham Stores?

What are the good department stores or the traditional places a young woman (equestrienne/private school/etc) registers for wedding gifts? I'm familiar with Belk's since it's a large chain but don't know any other department stores in that area.

let me think for a bit-there is a fabulous store in mountain brook that has silver, crystal, etc, but the name escapes me at the moment. i will get back to you.

carnation, can you come to our aid? it is located across the street from starbucks and is next to a chain sandwich/bread company.

I'm just trying to think where a girl from that area would be registered. She's registered at Williams-Sonoma but don't most brides-to-be register at a couple of places nowadays?

i found it, i found it!! the business i was thinking of it bromberg's & co., which is located in mountain brook. the phone # is 205-871-3276 and their website is brombergs.com. traditional, old fashioned jewelry/gift store like i grew up knowing.

another shop that you might look into is christine's. they often supply southern living magazine with linens, crystal, china, serving pieces, etc. for their photo shoots. their phone # is 205-871-8297.

in addition, there is a store called smith's variety which has locations in mountain brook and homewood(both suburbs of b-ham) that i love. carnation mentioned it in another thread-the rush handbook thread. anyway, smith's defies description, but is a store i could spend days in. an eclectic mix of inexpensive and fine items-they have some lovely embroidered linens-often with a monogram-that would make a lovely wedding gift.

there also is a bakery called edgar's in hoover that has lovely gift items(and some of the best baked goods in town).

i did not check to see if smith's or christine's have websites.

Another nice department store we have down here is Dillards. You can check their registry to see if they are registered there. I've heard there is a new trend of brides not registering for fine china etc. anymore. Grrrrr. I LOVE buying dishes. I'm dying to know what Jenna Bush picked for dishes but nobody seems to know. Didn't Tricia Nixon pick Aynsley?

I wish you luck on your search. I'm getting married in about 20 days, and the registering part was my least favorite...at least until now...doing the thank you cards.

I recommend breaking it up to 10 a night. It makes the task a little less overwhelming.

Have you check Saks and Macy's? They are also in the area, depending on where in Birmingham she is.

Thanks to all the tips which I have checked out with no success in addition to Bloomies, Nordstroms, Pottery Barn, even BB&B and Linens and Things. I found them only registered at Restoration Hardware and W-S. Maybe they aren't greedy? Woudn't that be refreshing....

Granted they are having a small wedding but one of my friends and her fiancee only registered at 2 places--Crate & Barrel and BB&B (they're getting married in Atlanta at the end of the month). She comes from a background like the one you described. I will say from looking at their registries they weren't being too greedy. There were of course a number of things that were too expensive for my pocket but I was able to get them something that was decently affordable for my income (and I could've even gotten them something cheaper than what I did). Non-greedy brides and grooms I agree are hard to come by--but it happens . Good luck finding something for this bride.

I just purchased a wedding gift from a Bed, Bath and Beyond Registry today. I had checked it out online, and knew I wasn't going for the china (in five years, it's going to be sooooooooo dated!), but I have to ask: does the salesperson who helps with the Registry offers any suggestions as to what one puts on a Registry or not?

This couple is about 27-28 (I know his parents). Among the items were a Mr. Beer Making kit, a yard of ale, Guiness glasses, a Margarita set, Martini set, THREE icebuckets (one with the vodka stems), an ice crusher, a shot glass set, and two fondue sets. Now this was just at BBB - their other registry had another two fondue sets, etc. The couple lives in a state where one can buy liquor etc in a grocery store, or I think they would have been registered at a liquor store. No silver, mixers, toasters, food processors, coffee makers, or any of the "normal" appliances were on either the already purchased or still need lists. Maybe they already have that stuff?

I ended up kitting out the bathroom - matching soap & lotion pumps, soap dish, toothbrush holder, trash basket, and mirror/radio - and had it all sent. I fully intended to buy something really nice, for about $100-$125 (I usually get one or two place settings of silverware), something that will last a long time. I just hope they enjoy their bathroom.
