I think there is some truth in this. My family has quite strong opinions on what kind of people I should associate with, especially when I was little...my choices of friends does NOT reflect their preferences, and never had.
Hm... Well I'm not sure if I'm always friends with people that my parents want me to be friends with, but I hang out with people that are like me, and i'm super close with my mom and dad and they usually like who I hang out with... We are all open minded, educated and kind of hippie-ish
