Question Favorite Kappa Delta Program...

I am new to Greek Chat and have really enjoyed hearing from all of you lovely KDs from all over! I figured I would get a new conversation started for us to share about!

A friend of my posed this question to me the other day and I found it hard to choose just one answer!! Just curious...

What Kappa Delta program, that makes our sorority stand out among all other sororities, is your favorite and why?

I'm anxious to hear your responses!

I bet I can guess yours! My favorite "program" is National Women's Friendship Day. I love it, lots. Is yours the Dove Campaign? That one is pretty sweet, too.

I don't know that I have a favorite. I love our Christmas Seals, but if this question had been posed in April, I don't know that I would've thought of 'em!

I don't know why, but lately I've been thinking about our part in the Dove campaign. I want to think the best - that we want to celebrate all kinds of beauty, not just what the media tells us is beautiful. But I just can't shake the feeling that it's nothing more than a big business deal. We're just helping (directly or indirectly, I don't know) sell more Dove products. The cynic in me has made me sad about this. Maybe someone who knows more about this can shine some light and make me feel better about it. Regardless of the details here, it's still a good message...

I've talked a lot about the Dove campaign over the past year, so I can give a bit more information.

While we are bringing more attention to Dove products, our involvement is not directly targeted to help increase sales.

With the Uniquely Me program, Dove has teamed up with Girl Scouts to develop different programs that discuss body image, healthy eating, peer pressure, etc. KD's can work the programs into their Girl Scout involvement.

I've also been to a Stand Up Stand Out program that brought in one of the Dove models to discuss body image among the sorority women of that campus.

The reason I love our involvement with Dove is that it really can be related to any woman of any age. If your target is older women, an alumnae chapter could easily put together a program with the materials from the CFRB.

So, where I could see how our promotion of the DCFRB may help to sell their products, I feel we do more good in terms of helping women.

I would love to hear from you on this topic as well. As an older Kappa Delta, my concern is over doing it. Too many programs, perhaps? I can't see our chapter members being involved in all these programs and still being involved in other campus activities as well. It seems overwhelming to me but again maybe I'm just old. I even heard Avon and Maidenform mentioned at Convention this summer. Does anyone know what that is about?

I know I may be really off base and you can put me in my place as a sister has permission to do but I thought we were a social sorority. I know philanthropic ideals have always been a part of our sisterhood as they should be but is it becoming the focal point of our sisterhood. I know I don't have my ear to what is really going on in colleges today but is the focus on philanthropy in all NPC groups are just ours.

You have to understand, I predate Shamrock. When I was in school our only Philanthropy was Children's Hospital and the Awards for Research.

Please don't take me too much too task. It is an honest question

I think it would be too much if we were asking chapters to do something with every program that we have relationships with. As of now, Avon and Maidenform are not a part of every chapter's operations. Some have held parties with Maidenform in conjunction with NWFD, but that has been up to the chapter to do that.

We also have to remember that Kappa Delta is not just a collegiate organization. We spend only four (if that) years in a college setting and then the rest of our time can be spent with other alumnae. The alumnae chapters can choose to work with Dove, Shamrock, Girl Scouts, and even Avon and Maidenform.

When I discuss KD to non members, I express how proud I am to be part of an organization that is going beyond the "social stereotype" to team up with groups that have been helping women for years.

Along with social is of course philanthropy, but also academics, membership, and leadership. We want chapters to strike a balance between these areas and I think our growing partnerships are providing opportunities for members to do so.

I agree. The partnerships that we foster definitely inculcate into our members a sense of variety that is needed in our society today. Also, since they speak to alumnae groups, as well, these partnerships allow our sisters to choose an arena where they would like to participate; we're not forced into a box, so to speak. I know when I was in college, which wasn't too very long ago, I wanted even MORE involvement in our programs and philanthropies, but sometimes, we weren't always able to make the leap to do it. In my alumnae association, however, the sky is the limit. One question I do have for those of you who have participated in the Junior League program: what exactly do you do? I have always wondered that, since neither my AA nor my collegiate chapter connected with that program. Thanks!

Thank you Ta kala and Kathykd for your response. It is interesting to look at everyone's viewpoint for our 200,000 member sisterhood. I know I have taken this thread in a direction I don't think kdizzy intended but I come from an AA that less than 10 years ago had a membership of 110+. Last year our dues paying membership had dropped to 27. We had to ask ourself a lot of questions. What had we done wrong? A group of us met ( 5 generations of KD's ) from 20/something to a very young 60 something. (that would be me) We decided our own focus and that was chapter relations and support. We advertised this and low an behold we now are between 50 and 60 members and growing. I agree with kathykd, with so many choices the sky is the limit as an alumna and an AA. So....... my favorite KD program, at least for my AA and my area of the KD world is......CHAPTER SUPPORT.
