Parents Day Suggestions

So after much deliberation, the exec board and I finally picked a date and planned the chapter's first annual parents day picnic. We've set the date for Oct 15th and I am going to use this time as an opportunity to tell the parents about establishing a Parents Club.

But now that the hard work of sending out invitiations is done, I'm at a loss as to what to do exactly once the parents get to the house! Ice breakers sounds silly, I thought I'd have the president and philathrophy chairs give the parents the seaches they gave to the PNMs during recruitment, but then what!?!

Please help! Thoughts, ideas, suggestions, etc!

I checked out the mention of Parents Clubs in old Pledge Books, and there was no real information of guidelines or such. What they did leave me to believe was that PCs are almost like Alumnae Associations, but only concentrating on that one particular chapter.

Say that Omega Omega's living room needs to be painted, and their Housing Corporation has that very low on the list. The PC could work with the Housing Corp. to get it painted faster. Or if one of the parents can get a better deal on insurance (paint, furniture) than the Housing Corporation can, they can work with the HC. Some PC's have provided elegant parties at their homes or on their yachts or such.

Of course, this is NOT an official viewpoint; this is what I've gathered, and I could be very wrong on this. I think I would start by the usual getting to know each other, having punch & cookies (or such) and possibly having members of the AA and HC there, as contacts. Then together, see what they, as adults who are concerned with the well-being of the chapter, can do. If you have a definite goal, set one! If you're weak in an area, this is the time to correct that weakness (no place to hold a formal, no RMH locally but needing a philanthropy, etc). If nothing else, get the parents involved in saving pop tops. But don't let them leave without some feeling of purpose!

Good luck!

Thanks Honey for the reply. I was hoping to get some ideas on activities to do with the parents but guess I'll have to ask around elsewhere....

My brain is a little tired but..

The only thing I can think of is maybe have some of the girls talk about how ADPi has helped them. I mean when I joined my parents were super concerned. They really didn't want me in a sorority. They thought that it would bring my grades down. That I would drink/party/have sex/etc.. (the typical sorority stereotypes).

Um, I really can't think of any activities to do at a house. We had mom/dad weekends. ASU does parents weekend, but the actitivities are all done outside the house/dorm. If you do something like that, we went to dinner one night, paintball the next, bowling, a picnic-baseball game.

Sorry, not much help.

Good luck!

Activities to do with the parents:
  • Show recruitment slideshow or videos
  • Perform recruitment skits and songs
  • House Tours
  • Set up brag tables showing their awards, community involvement and campus involvement
  • Refreshments
  • A brief introduction of the advisers and what they do to help mentor the collegiate members, a talk about opportunities their daughters have within ADPi: ongoing life skills training through TME, scholarship program, leadership positions, self-respect, Parliamentary Procedure, supportive network, zero-tolerance hazing policy, teamwork skills, academic scholarship opportunities, the TCC program, opportunities following graduation for alumnae involvement and a few testimonials from Alum about how ADPi has helped them in their lives as college students and alum
  • Handout on ADPi history and membership benefits and what is actually mandatory and what is not
  • Handout on what the dues pay for if any parents need to have this
  • Q&A
  • Philanthropy craft and explanation of RMH support by ADPi, discuss ADPi Foundation
  • A gift to each visitor

Hope this helps! If you're looking for how to get your booster club started, contact the CA at USC. I know they have a parent's club. UCLA has one, not sure how active they are, but their CA will be happy to help you.
