Sororities and crazy women!!!
What is it about sorority rush and AI that attract a lot of crazy people? I don't see this pattern as much in other organizations, including fraternities!

I think it's because sorority rush is kind of a cattle call (No fat jokes please) ALL women who want to join, come now. Instead of going, often by yourself or with a roommate, to a fraternity rush event. As tough as sorority rush is, you face it with members of your PNM group.

Human nature-- we all want to belong and fit in. Even the non-conformists conform to a non-conformist culture-- the goths, the skin heads, etc. Being a sorority member seems like the perfect way to keep up with Jones and be thought of as poised, classy and someone who fits in with mainstream society. Some people get a bit obsessive, and maybe use the seemingly anonymnity of the internet to share details of their life that are far too intimate.

I understand that. But, aren't fraternities at the top of the social totem pole on college campuses also? 33girl might be right, but personally I have only witnessed this sort of craziness once with fraternities. I guess it varies from school to school.

Random question. The year I went through recruitment, do you remember the goth girl? She wore all black on 'Go UCF Day' and had one of those bar earrings that went through her septum. She also had some scary makeup going on. I have no clue why she rushed...probably just to see if she'd get in anywhere. I never saw her again after the first day so I'm assuming she dropped or was cut by everyone.

Girls are more likely to talk about everything and publicize it. That's why we get lots of sorority recruitment threads every semester and hardly ever any fraternity ones. (Only one comes to mind, actually.)

I know a girl who is sort of a hippiechick, and she is in a sorority. Alumna now, though.

Really? I thought we all had to be Stepford Wives, out to get our "MRS" degree?

Can't be Stepford Wives, because no sorority would ever take a married woman. The point of a sorority is to meet a husband, duh.

My point isn't to say that there are crazy hippies, goths, etc., who join sororities-- it is just that everyone is looking to conform to some social group; some fit in with more than one. Sororities represent the mainstream elite ideal. And while majority are a good fit with diverse interests, and backgrounds, they have a healthy sense of self esteem and personal value that makes the sorority a part of their identity, and not their whole personality. Some crazies are attracted to that latter aspect-- desparate to improve their social station or looking to be envied by others for their affiliation. Some think that by joining they will be popular and loved by all. Or people with a very poor sense of self join thinking the sorority will bring them self-worth.
I think there are fraternity crazies, too, but they manifest themselves in another way... and they don't tend to post much on the internet.
ZTAngel, I vaguely remember that girl... There's one every year like her... They usually rush at a parents' insistence or they don't understand what sororities are. Some think that joining a sorority is a pre-req to get involved with campus activities!

There will always be surprising situations. I went to college with a girl who got married in the summer after our freshman year. She lived in the dorm while her husband was stationed elsewhere in the army. Yes, she was in a sorority.

Hey now-I don't see anything wrong with it-but it is definitely something you've got to wonder about!

There's a local at Georgia State for married women called Mu Rho Sigma, or at least there was a few years ago.

Well . . . fraternities don't cap membership. So we can take an unlimited number of people we want at any one time.
That removes a lot of the competitives from the PNMs and places it on the House.
Plus, it means there is no comforing illusions (Rush was comptitive, quota, total etc) if a fraternity doesn't give you a bid, they just didn't like you enough.
Also, men don't seem to suffer from the form of wishfulfillment of seeking to join a GLO X-many years after leaving college, as much as women seem to . . . .
