Sororities and crazy women!!!
What is it about sorority rush and AI that attract a lot of crazy people? I don't see this pattern as much in other organizations, including fraternities!
|
I think it's in fraternities too...I saw plenty of it...guys just don't write it down. :)

I think it's because sorority rush is kind of a cattle call (No fat jokes please) ALL women who want to join, come now. Instead of going, often by yourself or with a roommate, to a fraternity rush event. As tough as sorority rush is, you face it with members of your PNM group.

Human nature-- we all want to belong and fit in. Even the non-conformists conform to a non-conformist culture-- the goths, the skin heads, etc. Being a sorority member seems like the perfect way to keep up with Jones and be thought of as poised, classy and someone who fits in with mainstream society. Some people get a bit obsessive, and maybe use the seemingly anonymnity of the internet to share details of their life that are far too intimate.

Girls are more likely to talk about everything and publicize it. That's why we get lots of sorority recruitment threads every semester and hardly ever any fraternity ones. (Only one comes to mind, actually.)

My point isn't to say that there are crazy hippies, goths, etc., who join sororities-- it is just that everyone is looking to conform to some social group; some fit in with more than one. Sororities represent the mainstream elite ideal. And while majority are a good fit with diverse interests, and backgrounds, they have a healthy sense of self esteem and personal value that makes the sorority a part of their identity, and not their whole personality. Some crazies are attracted to that latter aspect-- desparate to improve their social station or looking to be envied by others for their affiliation. Some think that by joining they will be popular and loved by all. Or people with a very poor sense of self join thinking the sorority will bring them self-worth.
I think there are fraternity crazies, too, but they manifest themselves in another way... and they don't tend to post much on the internet. ZTAngel, I vaguely remember that girl... There's one every year like her... They usually rush at a parents' insistence or they don't understand what sororities are. Some think that joining a sorority is a pre-req to get involved with campus activities! |

Well . . . fraternities don't cap membership. So we can take an unlimited number of people we want at any one time.
That removes a lot of the competitives from the PNMs and places it on the House. Plus, it means there is no comforing illusions (Rush was comptitive, quota, total etc) if a fraternity doesn't give you a bid, they just didn't like you enough. Also, men don't seem to suffer from the form of wishfulfillment of seeking to join a GLO X-many years after leaving college, as much as women seem to . . . . |
