Thumbs down ...and he's greek (Media Frenzy)

Here @ George Mason U, we had our traditional Halloween parties. One member of a Greek organization made the mistake of dressing up in an offensive costume... he was a run away slave.

The incident made our local news. My question is what is societies fascination with believing that the Greek system breeds bigots and idiots when I've seen great people develop.

Damn that Animal House

Any thoughts? Where's the positive PR to highlight all the great things Greeks do? (philanthropy and such)

In some cases, past practices.

There are some threads about fostering positive images, but the real reason in my mind is that our chapters don't try to communicate favorable things until it's too late.

How many of your chapters are in normal contact with people from local media? If you see something good about ANY organization, it's because someone has contacted that newspaper, TV or radio station.

Why on earth would someone want to dress up as a slave?

It takes one stupid action to completely undermine all the good an entire greek system does.

Is it okay for a black student to dress up as an escaped slave?

Why would anyone, black or white, dress as a slave for Halloween? Just to get a reaction, or what?

Why would a student at University of Kansas dress up in a Nazi uniform on his first day of his freshman year? (Well, in this case he didn't want to be in college and ended up getting in a fight and getting arrested and expelled, but I digress...)

Update on the PiKap who dressed up as a slave for Halloween at GMU--their chapter was suspended for one year. Not because of the action, but because the action took place at a party which gathered media attention while the chapter was on social probation.

Find me a black student who would do this unless they were acting, or taking part in a historical recreation, and I'll personally give you $100 (US, not Canadian).

OK, will someone who might be quick to blame this kind of thing on "media frenzy" please explain to me how bright it is for a chapter on probation to throw a party where something like this could happen -- and get caught at it?

We see this over and over again.

Probation should be a wakeup call for a chapter.

Obey the rules and the media will have no reason to notice you, unless you want them to.

Then, it's called Public Relations...not News.

People have become so P C regulated and is beyond some comprehinsion.

But those who act like fools will be treated as fools.

If one gets his gonads in a squeeze, then there is a hurt some where. Oh, yes, if there is not a Greek Problem, there will be No Greek Media Frenzy will there?

Now, I guess I will go worry about the arc angle.
