Security or Freedom
I've had an interesting argument about this. We were debating when it come to zero-sum game. Would you rather have security or freedom. Remember, it's a zero-sum game.

I chose security because, although it would be very idealistic to (very loosely) quote Ben Franklin and opine that "Those who choose security over freedom deserve neither", I believe that the most important aspect of a sovereign nation is the ability to protect itself from its enemies. Once that is achieved, we can go from there.
This is a great thread, Arya! I'm looking forward to reading everyone else's opinions.

Security. It may sound like double-speak, but I believe that freedom without security is impossible.
A lot of folks would also argue, and I'm not entirely one of them, that although we have much more freedom in the U.S. than most, there are still a lot of things from which we aren't really free.

Freedom. Most definately freedom. Although, I have to agree with DeltAlum that you can't have freedom without security (i.e. our freedoms are kept secure by the Constitution). But, I don't agree with imposing on freedoms to insure security.
My reason: Read the book 1984 and that'll be my reason.
BTW, I heard a quote on Law and Order Criminal Intent:
"Yea, I read the Patriot Act in it's original form: 1984."

Freedom.
It really doesn't matter how 'secure' the gov't tries to make it, there will always be a way to attack us. All 'security' will serve in the end is basically imprisioning us in our own country (to the extent to truly keep us 'safe').
