Theta History Song

Hey Ladies- this is kind of silly, but due to a slack pledge mom or two, alot of girls in my chapter don't know facts about theta's national history- such as our founders or the year we were founded or anything! I was wondering if anyone knew of a catchy rhyme or song- school house rock style- we could teach our new members so we dont have this problem anymore!

The Kappa Alpha Theta website is a great resource for you. Any member, with their member ID has access to the site which has a wealth of materials for you to access, both through the various tabs and the resource areas. As well, each new member should receive a Theta for a Lifetime manual at their first new member meeting. One of the first sections is all about our amazing history and heritage, including a great look at Theta's through the decades. Hopefully members keep these binders as a resource throughout their college years.
Additionally, your education officer who is elected to oversee the new member period should be using the Theta for a Lifetime Facilitator's Guide to plan the new member period. If she does not have this manual, she can access it through the website. If this is an area where you see your chapter lacking, perhaps create a committee to assist with the new member period and don't hesitate to reach out to your advisors, as they are an excellent resource. It can be overwhelming if you have a large new member class. Best of luck to your chapter.

I suggest that you read Bound By A Mighty Vow by Diana Turk. You'll learn a LOT about the earliest days of Theta, Kappa, Alpha Phi, Chi Omega, Pi Phi, Sigma Kappa, and many other women's GLOs. I've suggested that a paragraph or two be read each week at Chapter, or included in the weekly emails. When I attend Chapter meetings, I always read something or share some tidbit of early Theta history. It's fascinating to me and the actives have gotten into it and now expect it, believe it or not.

disclaimer: I don't have any financial interest nor do I gain anything from the sale of this book.

Work with your Advisory Board as well; they should be a great resource in your member development program.

Good Luck!

yes, we all have the manuals and have access to the materials, and I and all of our officers and some of our members are educated... I was just hoping for a catchy cheesy song or rhyme someone might have come up with at some point

Pardon the swerve/

You could always come up with one yourselves! Ask some of your English majors to put together some "rhymy" poems to help everyone remember. It doesn't have to be to music, but if so, choose a simple melody like Twinkle Twinkly Little Star or something like that.

/end swerve/

We did a chapter retreat my Jr or Sr year and one of the activities was a song competition.. I think we counted off into 6 groups, and each group had to pick a song and make up new lyrics. We ended up using one of them for recruitment the next year. (ah, just realized it must have been my jr year for the retreat.. ) There are some songs I can't hear on the radio without thinking of certain chapters sisters belting out modified tuneless lyrics.

We were taught the Founders' names to the tune of Frere Jacques -- I am NEVER going to forget them!
