Welcome to my vent, everyone!
Today's vent deals with the GreekChatters who, when someone disagrees with them, voices a strong opinion about the content of a post, seeks to verify facts presented by others or points out something untrue or wrong that was posted, always fall back on the same tired, old rebuttal,
"Get a life"
I can't speak for everyone on here, but I have a life. I have a busy, fulfilling life with great friends, awesome family and many interests and hobbies. One of my hobbies is going on GreekChat while I'm waiting for the laundry to dry or killing a few minutes before I pick up the kids at school or whatever. Sometimes, if I can't sleep, I even sit down for an hour and read through the posts I've missed and choose a few to reply to.
Why? Because I enjoy it, that's why. No more, no less. Some people never miss an episode of "Friends", some people collect stamps, I enjoy going on GreekChat.
Just because I don't think people should be allowed to treat this forum as a place to rework their "Penthouse Letters" submissions doesn't mean I don't have a life.
Just because people choose to use offline means to verify that someone is who he/she says he/she is doesn't mean they don't have a life. Sure, this is the Internet. But so what? I just spent a large chunk of change on the Sephora website this afternoon. When I receive my AmEx bill can I just ignore it because I ordered the goods off the Internet therefore they don't exist in the "real world"? Ridiculous.
If someone responds passionately to a post and the opinion is something someone else disagrees with doesn't mean the first person doesn't have a life. Despite what some posters would have everyone think, it is NOT "uncool" to have strong feelings about something, nor is it "uncool" to express them via chatrooms, message boards, flyers, public service announcements, banners attached to the back of a single-engine aircraft......you get the point.
And just because someone thinks something is inappropriate and you disagree, it doesn't mean the other person has no life. It means that they don't share your opinion; that's all.
I don't know if "Get a life" is just "what the kids are saying" these days or if the people who fall back on that have a limited vocabulary or what (by the way, I'm not refering to anyone in particular. I can't even think of any specific times I've seen this at the moment. But I know I've read it a lot), but it is sure suffering from over-use and should mercifully be put to sleep.
And, lastly, even though I just spent a good 20 minutes typing this post, it doesn't mean I don't have a life
Thank you, thank you.
