"Get A Life" - Vent

Welcome to my vent, everyone! :)

Today's vent deals with the GreekChatters who, when someone disagrees with them, voices a strong opinion about the content of a post, seeks to verify facts presented by others or points out something untrue or wrong that was posted, always fall back on the same tired, old rebuttal, "Get a life"

I can't speak for everyone on here, but I have a life. I have a busy, fulfilling life with great friends, awesome family and many interests and hobbies. One of my hobbies is going on GreekChat while I'm waiting for the laundry to dry or killing a few minutes before I pick up the kids at school or whatever. Sometimes, if I can't sleep, I even sit down for an hour and read through the posts I've missed and choose a few to reply to.

Why? Because I enjoy it, that's why. No more, no less. Some people never miss an episode of "Friends", some people collect stamps, I enjoy going on GreekChat.

Just because I don't think people should be allowed to treat this forum as a place to rework their "Penthouse Letters" submissions doesn't mean I don't have a life.

Just because people choose to use offline means to verify that someone is who he/she says he/she is doesn't mean they don't have a life. Sure, this is the Internet. But so what? I just spent a large chunk of change on the Sephora website this afternoon. When I receive my AmEx bill can I just ignore it because I ordered the goods off the Internet therefore they don't exist in the "real world"? Ridiculous.

If someone responds passionately to a post and the opinion is something someone else disagrees with doesn't mean the first person doesn't have a life. Despite what some posters would have everyone think, it is NOT "uncool" to have strong feelings about something, nor is it "uncool" to express them via chatrooms, message boards, flyers, public service announcements, banners attached to the back of a single-engine aircraft......you get the point.

And just because someone thinks something is inappropriate and you disagree, it doesn't mean the other person has no life. It means that they don't share your opinion; that's all.

I don't know if "Get a life" is just "what the kids are saying" these days or if the people who fall back on that have a limited vocabulary or what (by the way, I'm not refering to anyone in particular. I can't even think of any specific times I've seen this at the moment. But I know I've read it a lot), but it is sure suffering from over-use and should mercifully be put to sleep.

And, lastly, even though I just spent a good 20 minutes typing this post, it doesn't mean I don't have a life :)

Thank you, thank you.

Killarney, I made a post about get a life. I assume this was at least partly referring to me. I'm very much on the side of the people that are working to make this place better, and get rid of UF Pike. Hell, he has personally attacked me more than a few times on these boards. I am also a firm believer that the exuse that people can act however they want because it's the internet is bullshit.

However, the fact that people are in there posting over and over again, never really saying anything new is sad and I really don't understand the point. It's not doing anything. It's not helping anything. The facts have been presented to John and the public and now it's left up to us to wait and see if John has anything to say, or what UF Pike has to say for himself now. Arguing amongst ourselves isn't going to make any of this happen any faster, so why waste our time?

I know you have a life. I know I have a life. I know most of the people on this site do in-fact have a life. We wouldn' t be greeks if we didn't. However, shouldn't we be out LIVING that life instead of making useless arguments on the internet?

To each their own...

I don't see how it's such a waste... I could be playing a Playstation game instead:D

I'm here for information AND entertainment. If I see something I have an opinion about I'll let you know. You never know when someone will see something in one of your opinions that could help them or help you to reach a better mutual understanding of something.

If you're referring to the thread where UFPike was accused of being phony... Well hell the boy had it coming:D I don't care where you are in life.. on the internet, at work, wherever. If you treat people like dirt, they're likely to bite back. And they did. I won't go into whether or not it was valid/invalid or even in good taste but that's typically the way it works.

I agree with you guys. "Sandbox" politics will always play out.

Some of the girls gor offended by Uf_pike so they told us all he has cooties lol.

Did you hear that uf_pike? The girls of GC think you have cooties and don't want you to play in "their" sandbox anymore lol.

I am sure they have lives lol. Its just part of their lives to be narrowminded, super sensitive, uptight, vindictive people.

Hey whatever floats your boat lol.

So in the Spirit of what KilarneyRose said:

I officially recognize that everyone has a life, even if some are rather tawdry.

James 11-24-2002 03:03 AM

What facts have been presented Shine? Since he was banned the first time, well nothing has changed. Has there been something new, some new evidence, that should get uf_pikes lastest screen name banned? Has he done something new?

Or do you just not like the guy lol?

I think this falls into the category of "spin off" thread lifesaver predicted!;)

I have to agree with several points made thus far. I'm like you Killarney, I HATE it when I get a tired response whether it's on the net or in "real" life. (you can add "Get Real", "Chill out" "Panties in a wad" etc...) It seems to indicate the other person has nothing else to add to the discussion and attempts a final "jab".
Much better to say, "I guess we will agree to disagree".
Shine-However, the fact that people are in there posting over and over again, never really saying anything new is sad and I really don't understand the point. It's not doing anything. It's not helping anything. The facts have been presented to John and the public and now it's left up to us to wait and see if John has anything to say, or what UF Pike has to say for himself now. So much truth here, yet...Many of us on GC do this at different times. It varies from thread to thread. I'll go BONKERS on some issues that leave others scratching their heads as they move on.
ktsnake-I'm here for information AND entertainment. If I see something I have an opinion about I'll let you know. You never know when someone will see something in one of your opinions that could help them or help you to reach a better mutual understanding of something. EXACTLY!!!

Personal attacks is what got this whole thing started and to carry them over from one thread to another and another is...IMO, silly.
New thread, new conversation. The topic being "rebuttals during a debate." Bottom line, either bow out gracefully or use your mental ability to deflate the MESSAGE, not the MESSENGER!

Tons of people from GreekChat have said those words to me. I don't really respond to it though.

I think people are fools for coming out and saying "HEY I HAVE A LIFE CUZ I DO THIS AND THAT!!!". I don't see why people are always trying to prove themselves on the internet.

I don't need to PROVE to anyone what kinda life I live. I'm happy with who I am. Can you say the same?

I made one statement saying I was happy and you made a huge post trying to convince people you're not a loser.

You have problems, sweetie.

Everyone sing along with Imthechamp... (to the tune of "Popeye the Sailor Man")

I'm such a happy champ,
my mommy thinks I'm a scamp!
She's worried you see,
'cause no one likes me,
But I am a happy champ!

I play by myself all day,
keystroking the time away.
For myself I can fend,
'cause I'm my best friend,
Oh, I'm such a happy champ!

I try to make others feel bad,
Though really they think I'm sad
I'll keep trying to deceive
Hoping they'll all believe
That I am a happy champ!

Give it up while you can,
You've lost my attention span.
The nastier you be
the less you'll convince me
That you are a happy champ!

toot toot! ;)

RubberSoul 11-24-2002 09:43 PM
