Fraternity Letters
I was wondering since I just came upon this non-greek letter thing recently. How did the Farmhouse, Acacia, and Triangle fraternities get that name and why don't they use regular greek letters? Are they good fraternities, do any of you guys have them on campus?

Can't speak for exactly how they came about getting those names. I think I've read somewhere that FH was founded in a farmhouse and it started out as more of a club that met "at the farmhouse" or something along those lines. Acacia is a greek word and I forget what it means right now but it's something like friendship. I have no idea about Triangle, but I think it has something to do with the importance in Architecture, Engineering and Sciences which are the majors they tend to exclusively rush. I could be wrong about all three of these Organizations so if any brother of these houses wants to offer the correct explanations I'd love to hear them. I also bet that you could also go to their national Websites for explanations.
All three houses are on the University of Nebraska campus so I can speak about them. Like any GLO chapters can vary from place to place so I'm by no means making generalizations about the national organizations.
- FH is a very strong chapter here at Nebraska, they usually win grades (except for this past semester when we won
...and for the next 7 semesters while I'm here too...I hope!). They used to be almost exclusively ag majors, but now they are bit more diverse, however they still apparently don't have a lot of Humanities majors. This is at least in part, I think, to where their house is located since it's on UNL's East campus which is primarily ag related, so rather than take the 10 minute bus ride to UNL's City campus, many humanities majors just choose houses that are on city campus. They are the only other house besides mine that has completely dry living quarters. I'm pretty sure that it's a national thing for them, but they are very much christian based. I don't really know any of their guys, but I had a friend that got kicked out in his second week of pledgeship for some bogus reasons but other than that I haven't heard any other terribly negative things.
- Acacia, is just like any other house...their chapter house is off campus aways, and I think that it hurts them during rush, just b/c people arent' willing to walk that far everyday to get to class. They kinda have a poor reputation, and I was kinda put off by the way they rushed me, considering I didn't even visit their house once and they kept calling me, even after I had signed with Beta earlier in the summer. A lot of girls that I know make fun of them all the time, and the frats tend to make fun of them for having had an openly gay president several years back. I don't really know them other than their reputation.
- Triangle is a decent house, but I've had girls tell me that they tend to be somewhat full of themselves, particularly considering that they arent' "that" house. They aren't bad, but many girls don't think they are worthy of acting the way they do. They aren't on greek row, and are the only house left that is university built greek housing which lacks the character of the old chapter houses. Their house looks just like an apartment complex for the most part. I think that they are hurt by their location, they don't get to be a part of things like stealing of composites or any other greek "shenanigans" that occur on a whim. They are ALL either science, engineering, or architecture majors.
Hope this answers your questions.

We have an ACACIA chapter on our campus. From what I understand it's one of their top chapters around the country. They've won grades almost every semester (except last one where we won! and as Beta said above, we probably will keep winning also ). From my understanding of them Acacia is the Greek word for peace and their roots are in masonry. I believe they were a direct offshoot of masonry and in the beginning were a 'masons only' type of fraternity. Their entire ritual and symbollism has something to do with the Pythagorean Theorum.
They're a real group of guys and most of them I think would say that their top two houses during rush were Sigma Nu and Acacia
