For my confirmation, my granddaddy gave me a Bible and he inscribed this quote from Mr. Mandela on the inside cover:
"I learned that courage was not the absence of fear, but the triumph over it. The brave man is not he who does not feel afraid, but he who conquers that fear."
Now these two inspiring, brave, wonderful gentlemen are in Heaven together. They've earned their rest.
RIP Mr. Mandela

I told an officemate of mine, a Scottish woman, that he had died. She informed me that he "wrecked South Africa." That was news to me. Even my South African friends never said anything like that.

A towering world figure, I'm glad Nelson Mandela lived long enough to see and experience the freedoms and dignity he fought for so courageously throughout his life.
He lived his life unbowed in the face of evil, yet by his example, taught his countrymen, and the world, that love and justice will, indeed, win.
May God bless his soul.

...waaat?
That's weird to me. Most Scottish people I know (especially Glaswegians) appreciated and sympathized with Mandela. When he appeared in George Square to receive the Freedom of Glasgow, the crowd was huge
But of course, arseholes and racists are found everywhere. Le sigh.
Sad day

I'm glad he's finally at rest. What an amazing and at at times terribly tragic life.

“If I had my time over I would do the same again. So would any man who dares call himself a man.
“I am fundamentally an optimist. Whether that comes from nature or nurture, I cannot say. Part of being optimistic is keeping one’s head pointed toward the sun …There were many dark moments when my faith in humanity was sorely tested, but I would not and could not give myself up to despair.
“No one is born hating another person because of the color of his skin, or his background, or his religion. People must learn to hate, and if they can learn to hate, they can be taught to love, for love comes more naturally to the human heart than its opposite.
“Difficulties break some men but make others. No axe is sharp enough to cut the soul of a sinner who keeps on trying, one armed with the hope that he will rise even in the end.
“Man’s goodness is a flame that can be hidden but never extinguished.
“It is never my custom to use words lightly. If twenty-seven years in prison have done anything to us, it was to use the silence of solitude to make us understand how precious words are and how real speech is in its impact on the way people live and die.
