I think you're talking about recommendation letters. At many schools, especially in the SEC, letters of recommendation are absolutely, positively necessary. At some schools, they are an added "bonus" that will probably help you during recruitment, but they aren't absolutely crucial to have. At some schools, hardly anyone has letters of recommendation. It really depends on your school.
I wouldn't say it would make you look "bad" to not have one at a school where they would be considered absolutely necessary to have. However, you will almost surely see a lot more cuts early on than girls who do have them. At some schools, having letters of recommendation is crucial to having a successful recruitment.
