Colony Officer?
For those of you who were/are officers in a Greek colony, how did you decide what you wanted to try for?
Usually, a prospective officer can ask the current officer and/or someone else in the chapter but with a colony, there is no current officer.

In Alpha Phi, I believe they teach the colony members about the different departments and positions/roles available to them well before they hold elections.

You learn about the offices/positions during the colony ed process from the Consultant and colony director (our staff member assigned to work with colonies) well before elections. Our colonies don't start off with officers immediately. So it's not like "hey you're a colony, now who wants to be President?" at the very first meeting.

I specifically remember we were given an org. chart which laid out exec positions, all the councils and which position was the head of each council. I'm pretty sure we were given some documents that provided descriptions of all the positions and the responsibilities that went along with them. (In fact, I'm almost certain--I'm going to be helping with officer interviews for colony this weekend, and I was provided a document that had all the positions and details about them).
Some of the "larger" positions such as president, membership VP, etc., were also outlined in our New Member books.
Finally, we also had our ELC who could provide more insight.

My chapter was an absorption of a local sorority. We went into slating/elections at the end of the fall semester of my sophomore year knowing that it was likely, but not yet firmly decided, that we would become a colony of AEPhi in the spring. As it happened, every Sigma Iota Phi office had a corresponding AEPhi office, so the transition was smooth. (Except that I was the ritualist who didn't know the ritual. We brought in a couple of additional new members before we ourselves were initiated, so I was responsible for arranging their new member ceremonies. The national office took care of the arrangements for our initiation.)

On the fraternity side of things, for my chapter (then colony / interest group), we just got a bunch of detailed officer manuals for each position, and everyone read through them.
We then elected people into positions on the second day, and the general pattern was that the upperclassmen and those with the most confidence got most positions.

I got my first colony office because no one else ran for it.
