Disaffiliation from a local to pledge a national at a diff school?

I know there are a few threads about this topic but i wanted to specify my circumstances. I pledged a local sorority that is not recognized by the school i went to last semester but it is recognized by the city it is in. I transferred to a new school this semester and am looking to disaffiliate from the sorority that i was in at my own school. im not doing this just because i transferred, but rather because things changed once i left. The sisters hate each other and spread rumors about each other behind their backs. They also are having problems with other sororities on campus because frankly some of my sister are really bad gossipers and i dont want to be associated with that at all. Also the pledge class that they took this semester is making a bad name for the sorority by acting in ways that used to not be allowed in the sorority. Things have changed so much and i dont feel as if i can be a sister anymore and still keep a good conscience. At the new school that i am at iv made a lot of friends and they want me to pledge a national sorority on campus that they pledged this semester.. i really want to do this, but dont know how to break it to my sisters at my old school that i want to go from inactive to disaffiliated. Im also nervous about going through rush once i disaffiliate. should i be honest and say i was in a local but disaffiliated or should i wait until if/when i get a bid and accept it? HHELP

What? Like the Chamber of Commerce recognizes it?

There's really no need for you to officially disaffiliate unless one of the groups (your current local or the one you want to join) has a rule that you cannot belong to ANY other social group. But if that's the case, just tell the local what you said here - you're uncomfortable with the direction the group is going and wish to disaffiliate.

As far as rush at the new school, don't the girls who want you to pledge already know this from looking at your Facebook page and seeing your local sorority stuff on it?

It means quoted for posterity... people do it when they see trainwreck/troll potential in a thread. Consider yourself educated!

Because you shared too much information.

And we don't want late GCers to miss the information in the event that you change your mind about the post.

Well the first thing is, what do you mean by "recognized by the city"? That sounds a little odd.

you should not have to disaffiliate with your local, but you sound so unhappy, why not just go ahead and quit? maybe it would send the remaining sisters a message that they need to stop all the in-fighting and learn to get along.

You are "allowed" to join an NPC sorority, even if you have been a member of a local sorority. That being said, you need to let the women in the sorority you are interested in joining know that you were in a local sorority, because it might impact whether or not they give you a bid. I know that it's probably tempting to just not mention it, but think about how your future sisters would feel if they felt like you withheld information to try to look better to them. Also, you might feel like you cheated your way in, which could tarnish your feelings about the NPC group. It is better to be upfront about it, even if you think that it might diminish your chances of getting a bid.

As for disaffiliating with your local, I'm no NPC Green Book expert, but I don't think it's necessary, just to join an NPC sorority. I would suggest that, if you do receive a bid from the new group, that you talk to their Panhellenic advisor about it. That is, unless you just want to go ahead and disaffiliate now because of the problems that you mentioned in your post.

Good luck!

ETA: I just re-read your comment about it being explained to you as a community service sorority recognized in the community. I'm not sure that would pose a problem at all with the NPC group. They might look at it as a plus that you were involved in something like that. My sorority had many members who were also involved in those types of organizations.
