Mergers between two Greek groups
I just read the history of Delta Sigma Phi and I was surprised at how many times they held serious discussions about merging with another fraternity. Talks with Alpha Sigma Phi were held in the 1940s, 1958, 1970 & 1981; with Delta Phi in the 1950s & 1961; Kappa Sigma Kappa in 1953; Sigma Tau Gamma in 1957; Phi Sigma Epsilon in 1958 & 1978; Alpha Delta Phi in 1972; Kappa Delta Rho in 1981; and Phi Lambda Chi in 1982. KSK later merged into Theta Xi in 1962 and PSE into Phi Sigma Kappa in 1985.
How many other fraternities or sororities have discussed mergers with another group? I know that the depression of the 1930s, World War II and all of the turbulence during the 1970s put several groups in a perilous position during those periods (and left even the strongest hurting). During the 1970s upheaval there was even some casual discussions between a sorority and a fraternity to merge because coed membership was such an issue at the time.
Tau Kappa Epsilon had talks with Sigma Pi during their early years. In 1942 a vote was taken to merge with Kappa Delta Rho (to form Tau Kappa Delta) but was eventually voted down by both groups.
Delta Phi & Phi Mu Delta did actually merge during the 1970s, but almost immediately dissolved it because of a liability issue and the realization of how incompatible their chapters were with each other.
Kappa Sigma in 1973 & Delta Upsilon in 1975 held serious negotiations with Sigma Tau Gamma but neither panned out because STG was required to make too many concessions.
Does anyone else have knowledge of other mergers discussed?
