Mergers between two Greek groups

I just read the history of Delta Sigma Phi and I was surprised at how many times they held serious discussions about merging with another fraternity. Talks with Alpha Sigma Phi were held in the 1940s, 1958, 1970 & 1981; with Delta Phi in the 1950s & 1961; Kappa Sigma Kappa in 1953; Sigma Tau Gamma in 1957; Phi Sigma Epsilon in 1958 & 1978; Alpha Delta Phi in 1972; Kappa Delta Rho in 1981; and Phi Lambda Chi in 1982. KSK later merged into Theta Xi in 1962 and PSE into Phi Sigma Kappa in 1985.

How many other fraternities or sororities have discussed mergers with another group? I know that the depression of the 1930s, World War II and all of the turbulence during the 1970s put several groups in a perilous position during those periods (and left even the strongest hurting). During the 1970s upheaval there was even some casual discussions between a sorority and a fraternity to merge because coed membership was such an issue at the time.

Tau Kappa Epsilon had talks with Sigma Pi during their early years. In 1942 a vote was taken to merge with Kappa Delta Rho (to form Tau Kappa Delta) but was eventually voted down by both groups.

Delta Phi & Phi Mu Delta did actually merge during the 1970s, but almost immediately dissolved it because of a liability issue and the realization of how incompatible their chapters were with each other.

Kappa Sigma in 1973 & Delta Upsilon in 1975 held serious negotiations with Sigma Tau Gamma but neither panned out because STG was required to make too many concessions.

Does anyone else have knowledge of other mergers discussed?

oldu, several NPC groups did merge.

Theta Sigma Upsilon --> Alpha Gamma Delta
Phi Omega Pi --> Alpha Omicron Pi
Pi Kappa Sigma --> Sigma Kappa
Theta Upsilon --> Delta Zeta
Alpha Delta Theta --> Phi Mu
Beta Phi Alpha --> Delta Zeta
Beta Sigma Omicron --> Zeta Tau Alpha
Delta Sigma Epsilon --> Delta Zeta

And one NPC sorority, Iota Alpha Pi, dissolved in 1971 without merging or being absorbed by another NPC.

As far as Alpha Phi Alpha goes, I have not found any evidence of any offers or negotiations at mergers. In the NPHC as a whole, I have only been made aware of one offer at a merger between two other fraternities. That didn't pan out and everybody ended up doing just fine.

I discussed how awesome it would be if Clive Owen walked into my bedroom naked. Let's have a thread about that instead.

Chris Noth would be better.

Please to be seeing the list of links at the bottom of the page.

Not for Clive Owen though, I'm pretty sure he's not there.

Old U, when I was researching some of the groups at The OSU, I realized many Fraternities merged. I can't say if they were all IFC, though.

Beta Kappa merged with Theta Chi in 1942
Beta Sigma Tau merged with Pi Lambda Phi and Phi Beta Detla in 1960
Phi Epsilon Pi merged with ZBT in 1970
Phi Sigma Delta merged with ZBT
Phi Kappa merged with Theta Kappa Phi to become Phi Kappa Theta in 1959

FWIW, wikipedia says Phi Omega Pi was absorbed by Delta Zeta. Perhaps some chapters of Phi Omega Pi went to AOII if there was already a DZ chapter on their campus?

Sigma Phi Epsilon absorbed Theta Upsilon Omega sometime after the Depression, I believe.

There was also one more fraternity that we discussed absorbing, but it did not go through. That fraternity ended later being absorbed by another NIC fraternity.

It MAY have been Kappa Sigma Kappa merging with Theta Xi, but I cannot remember at the moment.

I know the Phi Omega Pi chapter at Auburn went to AOII. I think DZ was already on campus at AU in 1940 and AOII absorbed that Phi Omega Pi chaper around 1946. I also thought AOII absorbed a regional sorority Delta Sigma up in the Northeast.
